JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. ----
After taking a 6-3 advantage highlighted by a pair of doubles in the third inning, the Radford softball team dropped its second game of the ETSU Tournament on Saturday in Johnson City, Tenn., falling to East Tennessee State, 8-7, in eight innings. The Highlanders gave up two early to Tennessee Tech on the way to a 4-2 loss in game one.

"We are doing a great job of attacking teams early," said head coach Maggie White. "As we continue to mature as a team, we will keep working toward consistency throughout the entire game."

Whitney Davis and Nia Chiles led Radford (3-10) with two RBI apiece on the opening day of the ETSU Tournament. Davis hit .500 with three hits, including a double and her third home run of the season. Maggie Rowe recorded a team-high four hits, hitting two in each game. Rowe's double against the Bucs (7-6) scored Davis for her lone RBI and Davis' second run of the day. Nine different Highlanders registered at least one hit, with five finding a hole in the defense multiple times.

Kelsey Weddle got the start in game one against the Golden Eagles (9-9), throwing five innings and giving up four runs on nine hits before Taylor Asimakopoulos came in as relief. In her collegiate debut, Asimakopoulos struck out one batter and didn't allow a hit in one inning of work. Tiffany Brown logged the second complete game of her career, facing 38 batters and giving up four earned runs against ETSU. The Bucs had eight hits and eight runs score with Brown in the circle.

Radford concludes tournament play on Sunday, March 8, against Tennessee Tech and ETSU. The Highlanders and Golden Eagles will meet up at 11 a.m., while Radford finishes the day against ETSU at 3 p.m.

:: GAME 1 ::
Tennessee Tech 4 :: Radford 2

Radford fell behind early to Tennessee Tech in Saturday's first game, giving up a run in the second and third innings before tying it in the top of the fifth. The Golden Eagles sealed the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-shot homer over the centerfield wall.

After being held scoreless through the first four innings, Davis ended the drought for the Highlanders and knotted the game at two with the 16th homer of her career. Casey Burns walked after Megan Honaker grounded out to put one runner on with Davis coming to the plate as the tying run. Davis has a team-high 13 RBI this season.

Tennessee Tech responded immediately though in the bottom of the frame with a two-shot home run of its own. Alyssa Richards connected on a pitch from Weddle and sent it skying over Becky Mantel's head in centerfield to make it 4-2.

Radford stranded nine base runners in the contest. The only inning the Red and White did not leave a runner on base was in the fifth when it tallied its two runs.

:: GAME 2 :: Eight Innings
East Tennessee State 8 :: Radford 7

After falling behind early to ETSU, Radford battled back to take a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. A series of timely hits and defensive errors forced extra innings and led to a two-run bottom of the eighth for the Bucs.

In the top of the eighth, Radford reclaimed the lead after starting with a runner on second due to tiebreaker rules. Mantel moved from second to third on sac bunt laid down by Rowe, and then scored on a long, high fly ball from Mackenzie Blackwell.

The Highlanders' 7-6 advantage was short lived though, as ETSU scored two in the bottom of the frame to end the game. With Jennine Duncan standing on second and the first batter of the side up, a throwing error that sent the ball off the dugout fence and into the outfield allowed both ETSU runners to round the bases and come home.

The Bucs struck first in the opening inning, scoring on a wild pitch. The runner reached on a leadoff single to third base. Three singles in the top of the second led to a fly out from Chiles to score Rowe to knot the game at one. ETSU stuck back in the bottom of the side though, scoring two runs to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Radford tallied five straight runs to take a 6-3 lead over the next 1.5 innings of play. Davis reached second on her sixth extra base hit of the season. She is the lone Highlander to hit a double, triple and home run this season. Mantel scored Davis with a single up the middle and was brought home on Rowe's second double of the year. Summer Robinson walked to open the fourth inning, and came all the way home on a throwing error from third base trying to field a ball put in play by Honaker. Chiles scored Honaker with a bunt played perfectly in front of the pitcher, and came in to score after ETSU committed a second fielding error.

The Bucs forced extra innings with two runs in the sixth. A single and a double put runners in scoring position with one out for ETSU. Alex Everett took off for home on a fielder's choice, but Chiles caught her with a throw home to keep the Highlanders' 6-4 lead. A single on the ensuing at bat scored one runner and a fly out to left field scored the second.
