A TRIO OF HOMERS LEADS RADFORD TO 9-0 VICTORY OVER ETSU, SWEPT BY TENNESSEE TECH

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. ---- Summer Robinson capped off a six-run third inning with a grand slam over the right-center wall to highlight Radford's 9-0 victory over East Tennessee State on Sunday in Johnson City, Tenn., on the final day of the ETSU Tournament. The Highlanders dropped their first game of the day to Tennessee Tech, 8-2.

"The second game was huge for us because we bounced back from not only a loss, but one of our players going down in tough way," said head coach Maggie White. "We really came together. We had a moment where we realized softball is a game, and all though it is important to us, it is a game. It was a moment that either makes or breaks a team, and this one came together to do what it had to do."

Radford cranked five home runs in the four-game tournament, four of which came on the final day of play. Kayla Bishton opened the scoring for the Red and White (4-11), hitting a solo-homer to right center against the Golden Eagles (11-10). In game two versus the Bucs (8-8), Davis hit a shot to dead center to give Radford a 2-0 edge. Becky Mantel sent the next pitch to opposite field for her third homer in the past six outings. Two innings later, Summer Robinson registered her first long ball of the season by clearing the bases for the Highlanders' second grand slam of the season.

Nia Chiles led Radford at the plate on Sunday with four hits in five at bats. She had an RBI single against Tennessee Tech to score Rowe and cut into the Golden Eagles' lead. Davis finished the day 3-6 with three RBI. She batted .500 on the weekend with two home runs and a double. Summer Robinson found her swing, batting .400 with four RBI on the final day of tournament play.

Three Highlanders batted over .500 on the weekend, led by Chiles' .545 from the plate. Radford had nine extra base hits at the ETSU Tournament, five finding their way over the fence.

Kelsey Weddle notched her first win of the season, throwing a complete game shutout against the Bucs. Weddle had three strikeouts and did not surrender a walk in the effort. She had a team-low 2.80 ERA in 10 innings of work. Brittany Wratchford started in the circle for the Highlanders in the early game against Tennessee Tech, throwing one inning and allowing four runs on four hits. Taylor Asimakopoulos struck out five batters, while giving up four runs on four hits in six innings of work against the Golden Eagles.

The Red and White take the field again on Wednesday, March 11, for a midweek doubleheader at Appalachian State. First pitch from Boone, N.C., is slated for 1 p.m., with game two to follow after at approximately 3 p.m.

GAME 1
Tennessee Tech 8 :: Radford 2

An early 4-0 deficit in the top of the first inning proved to be too much for Radford to overcome, as the Highlanders fell to Tennessee Tech, 8-2, for a second time this weekend at the ETSU Tournament.

The Golden Eagles opened the first inning with back-to-back singles to put two runners on base. Three ensuing walks scored two runs for Tennessee Tech before Gabby Perez singled down the left field line for a third run. With the bases loaded, Madison Taylor was hit by a pitch and notched the fourth tally.

Bishton led off for Radford in the bottom of the first with the fourth home run of her career.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead back to four in the second on a single up the middle to score a runner from third. After a scoreless two innings, Tennessee Tech added another run with a single through the left side to score Olivia Bennett standing on second.

A leadoff double to left in the fifth set the stage for Bennett to tally a RBI, singling to left. Leading 7-1, Rachel Karlan homered to centerfield in the top of the seventh with no one on base.

Maggie Rowe doubled down the left field line to attempt to mount a rally for the Highlanders in the bottom of the side. With two out and Rowe standing on second, Chiles hit her third single of the contest to score the runner.

Radford tallied seven hits in the game and left six runners on base. Tennessee Tech stranded 13 runners.

GAME 2  :: Five Innings
Radford 9 :: ETSU 0

A six-run third inning propelled Radford to a 9-0 victory over East Tennessee State in five innings to conclude the ETSU Tournament. In a game highlighted by three Highlander home runs, Weddle pitched a complete-game shut out to become the first Radford starter to hold an opponent scoreless since April 8, 2014.

The scoring started in the top of the first inning with three runs posted by the Red and White. With one out, Megan Honaker hit a single back at the pitcher and beat out the throw. A groundout by Casey Burns put Honaker in scoring position for Davis. Davis, already with one home run this weekend, cranked her fourth of the season to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead. It was the first time this weekend Radford struck first. Mantel wasted no time to extend the Highlanders' lead, sending the first pitch she saw over the fence to opposite field.

The Red and White blew the game wide open in the third inning, tallying six runs in the top of the frame. A fielding error on a drive from Honaker put a runner on second for the Highlanders. Burns stared down ball four to put two on for Davis. After fouling one back, Davis drove a ball on the ground up the middle to score Honaker. Radford loaded the bases with no outs after Mantel made the trip to first on a walk. Blackwell scored a runner to make it 5-0 with a single under the glove of the diving shortstop. Robinson cleared the bases with Radford's second grand slam of the season and third homer of the game to extend the lead to 9-0. It was Robinson's first home run of the season and fourth of her career.
