STREAK AT 11, RU WINS SERIES OPENER OVER WINTHROP

|

RADFORD, Va. - The recipe remained the same Friday night for winning baseball games as Radford got a solid pitching effort and timely hitting in a 3-2 win over Winthrop to open the Big South series at RU Baseball Stadium. Michael Boyle (6-2) worked into the eighth, Ryan Meisinger earned his seventh save, and Brad Keen's two-run, two-out triple in the fourth was the difference in the 11th straight win for the Highlanders.

With Boyle touched up for a home run and a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth which spotted the Eagles a 2-0 lead, the Radford offense responded immediately to grab the lead, and it was all the support the Highlander ace would need. Hunter Higgerson drove in a run with a double to right field setting the stage for Keen's drive into the right centerfield gap and bringing home the tying and go-ahead runs.

"That's what a Friday night series opener is supposed to be like with two guys going pitch-for-pitch against each other," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "Boyle competed. He didn't have his best stuff, but he really battled. We left some runs on the board, but Keen came through with a huge hit."

After a leadoff double for Winthrop in the top of the eighth, Meisinger came on to get the final five outs of the game. He worked out of the jam in the eighth and then gave up two hits in the ninth before striking out the final two batters of the game to secure the save.

"Meisinger executed when we needed it to close the game," Raccuia said. "We were an at-bat or two better tonight, and that was the difference."

Josh Gardiner led the offense with a 4 for 4 night at the plate, including a double. Higgerson was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Aaron Scoville and Danny Hrbek also notched two hits on the night.

Sam Kmiec (3-4) took the loss for Winthrop. John Menken's solo home run led the Eagle offense as eight different batters had base hits.

Of the 11 games during the win streak, six have now been decided by one, two, or three runs.

Radford (22-11, 9-1) stays atop the Big South standings with the win. Winthrop falls to 22-13, 3-7. The two teams will continue the series Saturday at 4:00.
