RADFORD SECURES SERIES OVER WINTHROP, WINS 12TH CONSECUTIVE GAME

|

RADFORD, Va. -  Hunter Higgerson's bases clearing double to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning put Radford in the lead early and for good, and the Highlanders (23-11, 10-1) cruised Saturday past Winthrop 13-6 at RU Baseball Stadium. RU won for a school record 12th straight game and secured the series victory over the Eagles (22-14, 3-9).

Radford capitalized on 11 walks and three hit batters by Winthrop pitching to plate 13 runs on just 10 hits. After Eagle starter Matt Crohan (4-3) walked the bases loaded in the first, Higgerson fired an 0-1 pitch into the left centerfield gap, and the Highlanders would never trail. Higgerson later scored in the inning on a wild pitch. His second hit of the day drove in RU's fifth run in the third to lead 5-2 at the time.

The Highlanders added single runs in each inning from the third through the sixth and then scored three times in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Crohan took the loss for the Eagles, who scored three times in the ninth to make the score seem closer than the game really was.

Dylan Nelson (5-2) gave Radford yet another quality start on the mound. He went 5.1 giving up two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

"We took a good approach at the plate early in the game and put runners on base with walks, and Hunter answered with a big swing," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "From there we were able to add a run at a time to stretch the lead. In the end, it was a solid team win with good defense. It's a series win, but as we are learning, it's one game at a time."

Higgerson finished the day 2 for 3 with his four runs driven in, and Brad Keen was 3 for 5 at the plate for the Highlanders. Anthony Paulsen had three hits for Winthrop.

The two teams will play the series finale Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
