HISTORIC WIN STREAK COMES TO AN END IN SERIES FINALE AGAINST WINTHROP

RADFORD, Va. ---- Radford's record-setting win streak came to a close at 12 games on Sunday after dropping the series finale to Winthrop, 9-3, at the Radford Baseball Stadium. Five extra base hits, led by Josh Gardiner's double and home run, was not enough to out power the Eagles' 10 hits.

"We just flat out got beat today," said head coach Joe Raccuia. "Their pitcher did a great job of slowing down our bat speed, and then we really didn't control a couple of their big innings."

Gardiner led Radford (23-12, 10-2 BSC), at the dish with a double and home run. He has 15 extra base hits this season, 13 of which are doubles. Hunter Higgerson, Patrick Marshall and Brad Keen all notched doubles in the outing. The Highlanders' only hit that did not go for extra bases came off the bat of Chris Coia, who hit a single toward short.

Mitchell Mackeith started on the mound for Radford, throwing 2.1 innings and giving up one earned run on four hits. Austin Ross came in as relief in the third inning, logging the most work on the day with four innings and 72 pitches thrown. Four runs came in on two hits with Ross on the bump. Kyle Palmer and Nygeal Andrews combined to close out the game for Radford. Andrews tallied three strikeouts in his two innings.

Winthrop (23-14, 4-9 BSC) struck first in the third inning after the first four batters of the side reached base without an out being recorded. Consecutive errors scored the game's first two runs before Mitch Spires scored a runner on a fielder's choice.

Gardiner cut into the three run deficit three innings later with his second home run of the season.

The Eagles responded in the seventh with four more runs. With the bases loaded, a walk and hit by pitch notched two runs for Winthrop before a single up the middle brought home the third and fourth runs of the inning.

Back-to-back doubles by Marshall and Higgerson put two runners on with no out in the bottom of the side. Trevor Riggs skied a fly ball to centerfield to give Marshall time to tag up and score. Down 7-2, Keen hit the Highlanders' third double of the inning to bring around Higgerson.

A leadoff home run extended the Eagles' lead back to five before a pair of singles scored one more for the visitors in the eighth inning.

Radford returns to action fresh off its series win over Winthrop on April 14 at Virginia. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
