RADFORD TAKES GAME ONE AT COASTAL

|

CONWAY, S.C. - Radford (24-12, 11-2) won its ninth straight road game Friday, 4-3 at #18 Coastal Carolina (26-11, 10-3), in the series opener of a three-game set between the Big South's league-leading teams. The Highlanders won for the 17th time in 20 games and own a one-game lead over the Chanticleers and Liberty in the Big South standings.

After Josh Gardiner led off the game with a double, Patrick Marshall greeted Coastal ace Alex Cunningham with a home run to right field on the first pitch he saw. The blast, Marshall's seventh of the season, cleared the visiting bullpen at Spring Brooks Stadium and gave RU an early 2-0 lead. It was a lead RU ace Michael Boyle would hold until the bottom of the second when Zach Remillard tied the game with a two-run shot for the Chanticleers.

A Boyle error on a pop up led to an unearned run in the fifth for Coastal. The hosts took their only lead of the contest on an RBI single by Anthony Marks to score Casey Schroeder, who reached to open the inning on the defensive miscue. The Highlanders answered right away in the sixth. Three straight singles by Marshall (2 for 4), Hunter Higgerson, and Danny Hrbek produced the tying run. Hrbek's line drive into left field brought home the run to tie the game 3-3.

Boyle's final inning of the night, the sixth, may have been his best. After back-to-back singles to open the frame for CCU, got a pair of strikeouts and a ground ball to end the threat and keep the game knotted. Boyle did not factor in the decision after going 6.0 innings allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned. He walked one and struck out five.

His relief, Daniel Bridgeman (4-2), worked 2.0 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit to earn the victory. Andrew Beckwith (3-2) suffered the loss in a 4.0 inning relief appearance for CCU.

Radford won the game in the ninth. Higgerson led off with a walk and moved to third on Hrbek's (3 for 4) third hit of the night. He scored on a wild pitch to give RU the lead with three outs to get defensively, which meant Ryan Meisinger earned his ninth save of the season. He retired all three Chants he faced in the bottom half to close out the win.

Remillard led the Coastal offense with three hits (3 for 4).

"This was a good Friday win. We didn't execute as well as I'd like on offense, but Boyle fought for every pitch and Bridgeman worked us out of a jam. Meisinger did what he does in the 9th," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "Marshall gave us a big swing to get us on the board. We found a way to get a win."

The two teams have adjusted the schedule for the remainder of the series. Sunday's finale has been moved to Saturday as part of a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. in an effort to try and sidestep potential inclement weather on Sunday.

With the ninth straight road win, RU is tied for the nation's longest road streak with College of Charleston and Missouri State.
