SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT COASTAL CAROLINA

CONWAY, S.C. ---- Radford softball came out strong in the second part of the doubleheader at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., on Saturday, but the Chanticleer offense responded, downing the Highlanders 9-4. Radford dropped game one 7-1.
 
"Our offense has been consistent over the past several weeks," said head coach Maggie White. "We need to find that consistency in the circle and make sure that we are not having lapses on defense in big situations. We need to put together complete games."
 
Becky Mantel extended her on base streak to 18 consecutive games after leading off both games with a single down the left side. Mantel finished the day 3-6 with a double. Whitney Davis opened the day with back-to-back hits highlighted by a double to left field. Casey Burns notched her 10th double of the season in game one to put her back in sole possession of the team lead with 12 extra base hits this season. Mackenzie Blackwell hit a pair of extra base hits on the day, hitting her third double of the year in game one and her third homer in game two. Blackwell went 3-6 on the day with two RBI.
 
Kelsey Weddle was given the ball to start game one, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Weddle struck out two in the effort, facing 20 batters. Taylor Asimakopoulos pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief, surrendering three runs. Abby Morrow made her first appearance in the circle since Feb. 28 in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one.
 
Tiffany Brown pitched the first 2.1 innings in the second part of the doubleheader, giving up four runs on three hits. Weddle came in as relief with one out on the board in the bottom of the third. After pitching one complete inning, Weddle was subbed out for Morrow, who had thrown 38 pitches to close game one. Morrow logged 2.2 innings in the effort, giving up two runs on four hits.

:: GAME 1 ::
Coastal Carolina 7 :: Radford 1
 
After 3.5 scoreless innings, the Chanticleers broke the defensive stand still with a two-run homer in the fourth. Kelsey Dominik opened the side with a double to left field. After back-to-back foul outs by Coastal Carolina, Annie Robinson entered as a pinch hitter and connected on a pitch over the left field wall.  
 
Radford's deficit grew in the fifth inning after Morgan Noad hit her team-best 14th home run of the season to lead off the frame. A second home run, this time with a runner on base, put the Chanticleers in front 5-0.
 
The Highlanders found the scoreboard in the sixth inning on a double by Blackwell to right field that scored Kayla Bishton. It was Blackwell's third double of the season and sixth extra base hit.
 
Coastal Carolina struck back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by Kory Hayden to bring the score to 7-1 in the Chanticleers favor. Hayden's long ball gave her the Big South record for career home runs at 59.
 
Coastal Carolina's four home runs tied a season high for the Chanticleers and were the second most the Highlanders have surrendered this year.
 
:: GAME 2 ::

Radford opened the scoring in the first after Mantel reached on her 27th hit of the season. Just a couple of pitches later, she broke for second causing a throwing error by the Chanticleers' catcher. With the ball rolling back toward the warning track, Mantel rounded third and came home. 
 
Coastal Carolina posted two runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Bri Chiusano led off with a walk and stole second. Hayden scored the runner on a double to left to tie the game at one. Hayden moved to third on a ground out to first and then scored on a pitch thrown into the dirt.
 
Blackwell knotted the game at two in the second with a two-out solo homer over the right-center wall.
 
The Highlanders regained the lead in the third after loading the bases with one out. Mantel led off with a hit by pitch, the 69th of her career. Nia Chiles beat out a grounder before Davis followed Mantel's lead and was hit by a pitch. Bishton drove home two runs with a single hit to left-centerfield.
 
The Chanticleers tied the once again and then took the lead, 6-4, in the third on their fifth and sixth home runs of the day. A one-out walk put a runner on for Noad, who hit her second long ball of the afternoon. Sara Rasley skied a ball over the trees in left to bring home Amanda Daneker.
 
Radford's deficit grew in the bottom of the fourth to five after Coastal Carolina posted three runs in the side. After loading the bases with one out, consecutive singles scored one run a piece. Rasley scored the third run on a sac fly hit to centerfield.
