SOFTBALL FALLS TO CHANTICLEERS IN SERIES FINALE, 5-1

COASTAL CAROLINA 5 :: RADFORD 1

CONWAY, S.C. ---- Radford closed out its three-game series at Coastal Carolina on Sunday in Conway, S.C., with a 5-1 loss to the Chanticleers.

"Playing together as a team is something we cannot sacrifice," said head coach Maggie White. "As we continue to fight, we need to be each other's biggest fans. We will continue to focus on the things we are doing well, and work to improve the areas in which we are falling short."

Nia Chiles connected on a pitch in the sixth inning and sent it into the trees in right-centerfield for her first career home run and fourth extra base hit of the season. Chiles is one of four Highlanders to have a double, triple and home run in 2015. She finished the contest 2-2 at the plate. Mackenzie Blackwell's first at bat went for a single to left field. Blackwell has reached in 12 straight games, marking the longest active streak on the team after Becky Mantel's 18-game streak came to a close on Sunday. Blackwell has a hit in eight of the past 10 games.

Tiffany Brown started in the circle, throwing three innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits. Brown faced 20 batters in the series finale before Kelsey Weddle entered the circle in the fourth inning. Weddle pitched three scoreless innings, holding Coastal Carolina (26-17, 11-2 BSC) hitless in 12 faced batters.

The Chanticleers opened the scoring in the first inning on a three-RBI home run by Morgan Noad. A fielding error at short placed the first runner of base and a walk put two on for Noad with one out.

The deficit for the Highlanders (10-23, 5-9 BSC) grew in the second after Coastal Carolina loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single before bringing one run across. Kiana Quolas gave herself some more insurance in the fourth inning, hitting a solo shot to left field to put the Chanticleers in front 5-0.

Chiles represented Radford's tally on the board with a lead off home run over the right-centerfield wall in the sixth. The solo long ball was the first of her career.

The Highlanders return to action on Wednesday, April 15, for a midweek doubleheader at Appalachian State. First pitch from Boone, N.C., is slated for 5 p.m.
