RADFORD, Va. ---- Fighting through consistent, light rain at the Radford Softball Stadium on Thursday night, Radford stumbled against Appalachian State, 17-0, 20-3. Becky Mantel led the Highlanders from the plate, tallying three hits and scoring a run.

"Tonight we discussed the overall goals of our program and reassessed our short term goals," said head coach Maggie White. "The most important thing right now is that we make sure we are accomplishing our daily goals of putting our best selves out there everyday."

Mantel went 3-5 in the doubleheader, highlighted by her fifth double of the season. She has 10 extra base hits on the year. Kayla Bishton notched two hits in the contest. In her lone official at bat in the two-game series, Whitney Davis cranked her team-best seventh home run of the year. Mackenzie Blackwell snapped her 12-game on base streak, failing to find a way on in game one.

Kelsey Weddle started in the circle for Radford in the first tilt, but was pulled in favor of Taylor Asimakopoulos after surrendering five runs and four free bases. Asimakopoulos faced 11 batters, giving up four runs, in game one before Tiffany Brown came in to finish the game. Brown threw 3.1 innings, striking out three Mountaineers and giving up five runs on seven hits.

Asimakopoulos got the nod in game two, throwing two-thirds of an inning in her eighth start of the season. She gave up four earned runs, with eight more unearned coming across. Weddle logged 4.1 innings in relief as she gave eight runs on eight hits.

The Highlanders will have a quick turn around as they host Winthrop for a three-game series at the Radford Softball Stadium starting Saturday, April 18, at 1 p.m. Game two of the doubleheader on Saturday will follow the conclusion of game one, with the finale scheduled for Sunday, April 19, at 1 p.m.  Saturday's contests have been made Radford's "Pink" games in support of finding the cure.
