SOFTBALL SNAPS SKID BEHIND WEDDLE’S ONE-HIT GEM, DROPS GAME TWO IN EXTRAS

RADFORD, Va. ---- Kelsey Weddle pitched a complete game, surrendering one hit to Winthrop to snap Radford's five-game skid. Following the 5-1 victory in game one, the Highlanders dropped part two of the doubleheader on Saturday at the Radford Softball Stadium, 7-5, in nine innings.

"We needed a good showing today after a rough week," said head coach Maggie White. "We came together and focused on things we can do as individuals, and picking each other up as a team. We are focusing on short-term goals that we can accomplish and did a good job of doing that today. All we ask from our pitchers is that they keep us in position to win games and they did that today."

Whitney Davis led Radford (11-26, 6-10 BSC) at the dish, batting .429 with six RBI on the day. Davis notched three RBI in each outing, highlighted by her team-best eighth home run of the season to score two runs in game one. Becky Mantel finished the day with three hits. Mantel hit the sixth double of her season in game two. She scored a team-high four runs in the doubleheader. Casey Burns hit her 11th double of the year to continue to pace the Highlanders in the category. Burns had two hits and an RBI on the day.

Kelsey Weddle was given the ball to start in game one, throwing her fifth complete game of the season. Weddle gave up a career-low one hit in the seven-inning effort, striking out a career-best five batters. The lone run that came across for the Eagles (20-23, 9-9 BSC) was unearned.

Tiffany Brown was given the ninth start of her freshman campaign, pitching 6.2 innings. Five runs came across with Brown in the circle, but none were earned with the Highlanders committing five errors in the contest. Weddle came in as relief with the score knotted at 5-5, but saw the winning two runs score in the ninth inning. She faced nine batters in her second appearance of the day.

Sherry Weddle, mother of starting pitcher Kelsey, threw out our first pitch at the #NFCAStrikeOut game.

"Most people have a connection to cancer," White said. "The girls on the team all have some personal stories that made them want step behind the cause and play their hearts out."

The series finale between the Highlanders and Eagles is slated for Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Radford Softball Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m.

:: GAME 1 ::
RADFORD 5 :: WINTHROP 1

Winthrop jumped on top first with a run scored in the third inning. Zharne Glover opened the frame by reaching on an error. Glover stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout by Paige Haley. A sac fly skied into centerfield would give Glover enough time to tag up and score.

Down 1-0, Radford wasted no time to answer by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Mantel led off with a single up the middle and swiped one of the Highlanders' six stolen bases. With Mantel on third and Megan Honaker on first after hitting an infield single, Davis recorded her first RBI of the day with a single to centerfield to score Mantel. Kayla Bishton kept the momentum going with a two RBI single right up the middle of the defense to give Radford its first lead of the game.

The Highlanders piled on two more runs in the fourth inning to give themselves a 5-1 advantage. Mantel reached first after getting hit by a pitch for the 13th time this year. Davis made sure the effort at the plate didn't go to waste, cranking her eighth long ball of the season over the left field wall.

Weddle had the Eagles' batters guessing at the plate, striking out five and giving up just one hit. The lone run that came across the plate was unearned.

:: GAME 2 :: 9 Innings
WINTHROP 7 :: RADFORD 5

Just as in game one, Winthrop struck first. The Eagles lit up the scoreboard in the first inning on a two-run homer by Kelsey Ritter. The base runner that came in to score reached on one of Radford's five errors in the game.

Winthrop added to its lead in the third. The leadoff batter reach on an error and moved to second on a single. A fly ball and fielder's choice scored one run.

The Highlanders battled back in the bottom of the third inning with three runs. Four consecutive singles by Nia Chiles, Mantel, Honaker and Davis brought around all three of the Red's tallies in the side.

Radford took its first lead of the contest in the fifth. Mantel led off with her sixth double of the season and moved to third after Honaker reached on an error. A fielder's choice scored Mantel before Burns' 11th double of the campaign put the Highlanders up 5-3.

The Eagles forced extra innings after notching a pair of runs in the seventh with one out. A double by Ritter scored one run before a single brought Ritter across the plate. Radford committed two errors to keep the inning alive.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Leah Young put Winthrop up for good on a two-run homer.
