RADFORD, Va. ---- Radford will split its team this weekend, with competitors representing the Red at the Virginia Challenge on the campus of UVA from April 17-18 and the Phoenix Classic on April 18 at Elon.
Preliminary action from the Virginia Challenge begins with the women's 100 meters at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Discus and triple jump will also be featured on the opening day before being concluded by the 400-meter run at 8:50 p.m. Saturday's action starts off with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:00 a.m. and the 5,000 meters at 9:30 a.m. The main bulk of competition is scheduled for Saturday. The final field event of the weekend will be the shot put at 8:30 p.m. before the event is concluded with the 10,000 meters at 10:00 p.m.
The majority of the Highlanders will travel to the Phoenix Invitational at Elon. Field events in Elon, N.C., will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw. Running commences at noon with the 4x100-meter relays. The one day-event concludes at approximately 4:45 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
Last weekend at the Mason Spring Invite, Teresa Williamson took eighth in the 800-meter run with a season-best 2:11.28. Williamson's career best of 2:10.86 came back at the Liberty Collegiate Invite on April 5, 2014. She concluded her day of racing in the 1,500 meters with a 4:32.73. Williamson's 12th-place performance crushed her previous season best time of 4:37.38 ran at the Virginia Cup on March 21.
Katie Hickey's day last week at the Mason Spring Invite started the 800 meters as well, clocking a new outdoor personal-best 2:16.10. She ran a 2:17.58 at the Virginia Cup earlier this year. In the 1,500-meter run, Hickey turned in a 4:50.49.
Madeline Thomas led a group of top-10 finishers for Radford on day one of the VertKlasse Meeting at the Belk Track at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C., on April 3 with a first-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Four different Highlanders finished in the top 10 of their respective events on the opening day of the VertKlasse Meeting.
Naihla Rose-Delia notched another top-10 result for Radford, coming in 10th in the hammer throw. Rose-Delia had a long of 45.89m (150-06.00) to shatter her career best by more than two meters. Shania Williams, coming off an eighth-place performance in the shot put on the opening day, had a long of 33.91m (111-03 .00) in the discus on April 4.
