SOFTBALL SURRENDERS FIVE LATE TO VIRGINIA TECH IN LOSS

VIRGINIA TECH 8 :: RADFORD 0

BLACKSBURG, Va. ---- After holding the high-powered Virginia Tech offense through four innings, Radford surrendered five late runs to the Hokies in the 8-0 loss at the Tech Softball Park on Wednesday night. The Highlanders return to Big South play this weekend after playing a pair of ACC opponents.

"We have faced some tough competition this week, and we need to go into this weekend ready to step up our performance and be on a mission to take a conference series," said head coach Maggie White. "Tiffany (Brown) held a strong-hitting lineup for four innings, and we need to be able to come in behind her and make lineups earn everything. The defense played well tonight, and we need to conitnue that into this weekend's series."

Mackenzie Blackwell and Maggie Rowe notched hits in the outing, highlighted by Rowe's fifth double of the season. She has 10 extra base hits this season.

Brown was given her 11th start of the season, throwing 4.2 innings before being pulled in favor of Kelsey Weddle. Brown gave up five runs on seven hits in the 25 batters she faced. Weddle faced four batters, surrendering three runs on two hits.

Virginia Tech (33-13) found the scoreboard in the second with one run. Back-to-back singles by Logan Spaw and Caroline Schoenewald put runners on the corners with one out. Lauren Gaskill scored the runner on groundout hit to first base.

Just as in the second, the Hokies notched consecutive singles with one out in the third. Jessica Mehr scored the two runners on the base path on a double sent on a line off the wall in left-centerfield.

The Highlanders (11-29, 6-10 BSC) engineered a threat in the fifth after Blackwell opened the inning with a leadoff single for Radford's first hit. Rowe followed up with a double skied to right-centerfield. A groundout and a pair of strikeouts would strand the runners.

Virginia Tech's lead grew to 4-0 in the bottom of the side on a solo shot over the left field wall by Michelle Prong. Vanessa Gonzalez nearly notched a homer of her own in the next at bat, but Becky Mantel robbed her of the run, reaching her glove just over the fence. Jessie Mehr kept the inning alive for the Hokies though with a solo long ball hit to right field out of the reach of Summer Robinson. A pair of walks gave Virginia Tech two runners before Gaskill doubled down the right line to score another tally. An ensuing double by Kylie McGoldrick brought across two more runs for the Hokies to end the ballgame at 8-0.

The Highlanders resume Big South Conference play this weekend at Gardner-Webb. Radford and the Runnin' Bulldogs will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m., and then close out the series on Sunday, April 26, at 1 p.m.
