SOFTBALL EDGED OUT IN FINAL FRAME BY GARDNER-WEBB

GARDNER-WEBB 7 :: RADFORD 6

SHELBY, N.C. ---- After taking a one-run lead in the top of the seventh, Radford softball surrendered two late to Gardner-Webb to drop the series opener, 7-6, in Shelby, N.C., on Friday night. Nia Chiles led the Highlanders with two RBI and her second long ball of the season.

"Tonight was a hard fought battle on both sides of the field," said head coach Maggie White. "It came down to who made fewer mistakes, but I'm proud of the effort we put forth. We are hungry for our next opportunity to compete."

Megan Honaker paced the team with three hits from the plate. Whitney Davis, Maggie Rowe and Nia Chiles all had a multi-hit game. Mackenzie Blackwell's single in the third gave her two RBI in the effort. Summer Robinson and Chiles both put the ball over the fence to account for two of the Red and White's six runs.

Tiffany Brown was given the start in the circle, pitching 5.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on eight hits. Brown struck out two batters as the Highlanders committed five errors. Kelsey Weddle came in to pitch 1.1 innings in relief, facing eight batters and giving up no earned runs.

The bottom of the seventh started with a single by Rachel Chumiskey to right field. After back-to-back outs for the Runnin' Bulldogs, an error brought across the tying run for Gardner-Webb and kept the rally alive. In the next at bat, Megan Champion's double scored the final run, putting the Runnin' Bulldogs up 7-6.

Radford scored first in the top of the opening inning after consecutive singles by Honaker and Davis put two on with one out. An error at shortstop allowed for Honaker to come home for her 19th run of the year.

Gardner-Webb knotted the game at one in the bottom of the first on a single by Chumiskey to score Megan Gibbons, who reached on a double to right-centerfield.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third, powered by Chiles leadoff homer. It was her second career long ball. An error and a single put two on base for Blackwell, who notched her lone hit of the day to score the runners.

After the Runnin' Bulldogs tallied one in the bottom of the third, Robinson skied her second homer of the year over left field to lead off the fourth inning.

Garderner-Webb scored three straight runs to knot the game once again heading into the seventh. Rowe doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundout by Robinson. Chiles tallied her second RBI of the night, hitting single to score Rowe from third.

The Highlanders and Runnin' Bulldogs will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday, April 25, with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The series finale will begin shortly after the first part of the doubleheader.
