SOFTBALL FALLS SHORT IN DOUBLEHEADER AT UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. ---- Responding with a four-run third inning in game two, Radford battled through several scoreless innings before a pair of late home runs proved to be too much to overcome at UNC Greensboro. The Highlanders dropped both games of the doubleheader, 8-3, 8-4.

"We were having runners get on and the bottom of the order was getting to the top, which is what you want," said head coach Maggie White. "We did not do a good enough job of moving runners when on though. We left too many on base and didn't take advantage of opportunities when they were presented."

Becky Mantel had three hits on the day highlighted by her seventh home run of the season coming in game one. Mantel was 3-3 in game one and was hit by a pitch, her 18th of the season. Nia Chiles notched her seventh extra base hit of the campaign in game one on a double hit to centerfield. Whitney Davis would score Chiles on a single. Davis and Megan Honaker both extended their hitting streaks to five games with hits in both contests. Summer Robinson went 4-6 on the day with a triple coming in game two.

Taylor Asimakopoulos started in the circle, giving up five hits and six runs in 1.2 innings of work. Tiffany Brown completed the outing, surrendering two runs and five hits in her 4.1 innings of action. Brown started the second part of the doubleheader, but was pulled in favor of Kelsey Weddle after 1.2 innings. Brown gave up two runs on three hits. Weddle's day lasted 4.1 innings as she gave up nine hits and four runs.

The Highlanders return to action this weekend against Longwood for the final series of the season. Radford will host the Big South foe at the Radford Softball Stadium for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE
UNC GREENSBORO 8 :: RADFORD 3

Radford struck in the first inning with a run batted in by Bishton. Mantel opened the game with an infield single hit to the left side. She advanced to second on a sac bunt laid down by Honaker and hurried home on a single hit up the middle to centerfield by Bishton.

UNC Greensboro wasted no time in taking the lead itself, posting three runs in the bottom of the first. Allison Geiner led off with an infield single hit to short before Nicole Thomas reached on a walk. Lindsay Thomas cleared the bases in the next at bat with a long ball hit over the centerfield wall.

The Highlanders' deficit grew in the bottom of the second after the Spartans loaded the bases without an out being recorded. After a strikeout, Asimakopoulos walked the next batter to bring in one run. Tory Wright connected on a pitch that she sent just past the diving glove of Chiles at second to score two more for UNCG.

Mantel put Radford back on the scoreboard in the third with a leadoff homer sent to the flagpoles in left-centerfield.

UNCG put its lead back up to five runs at 7-2 in the fourth after Wright skied a high-fly ball to left field to score Rachael McClaskey.

In the fifth, the Spartans notched another run, this time on a wild pitch. Dominique Madruga came across home plate after hitting a single to reach and advancing while the Highlanders held Gabrielle Cubbage in a run down situation.

Radford cut into UNCG's lead in the seventh after Davis lined a single into right field. Chiles came home on play for her 20th tally of the season. Chiles reached on a double hit to centerfield, her third of the year.

GAME TWO
UNC GREENSBORO 8 :: RADFORD 4

UNCG struck first in part two of the doubleheader after Tatiana Alcala cranked a triple into right field. A high-sac fly by Cubbage gave Alcala enough time to come home. A second run came across for the Spartans on a hotshot lined right back to the circle. L. Thomas kept the two-out rally going for UNCG with a double down the left side to score two and put the Spartans ahead 4-0.

Radford responded in the third inning with four runs. Honaker lined a single to leadoff and advanced to third on Davis' fourth double of the season. The bases were loaded with no out after a throwing error at third base allowed Kayla Bishton to reach safely. Mackenzie Blackwell and Casey Burns drove home one run a piece with a singles into left. Maggie Rowe knotted the game in the third with a single skied to right that scored Bishton and Blackwell.

The tie was broken in the sixth inning by a two-run home run by L. Thomas. Her homer scored her sister, N. Thomas, who reached on a double to right. Cubbage gave UNCG a four-run advantage with a two-run home run of her own to round out the scoring at 8-4.
