SOFTBALL’S LATE SPURT NOT ENOUGH IN DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST LONGWOOD

RADFORD, Va. ---- In its final series of the regular season, Radford dropped a pair of games against top-seeded Longwood, 15-4, 11-5. After falling behind early, Casey Burns' and Maggie Rowe's extra base hits spurred on the Highlanders to outscore the Lancers 5-3 over the final four innings.

"Our bats improved when we got some opportunities with base runners on, and we stuck to our offensive plan to capitalize," said coach Maggie White. "Maggie (Rowe) and Casey (Burns) had good days at the plate and stepped up to help us battle."

Burns cranked her 12th and 13th doubles of the year as she paced the Red and White with three hits on the day. Rowe went 2-3 with her eighth double to score one runner in game one before notching her sixth home run of the year in part two. Summer Robinson led the Highlanders in game one, going 2-2 at the dish with her third home run of the campaign. Nia Chiles tallied one RBI in the first part of today's doubleheader with a single to the left side of the infield.  Megan Honaker's six-game hit streak came to an end in game one, but she came back with two singles in game two.

Kelsey Weddle started in the circle for game one, throwing two innings and giving up seven earned runs. Weddle struck out two in the 61-pitch outing. Taylor Asimakopoulos pitched three innings in relief, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits.

Tiffany Brown was the starting hurler in game two but was pulled after 1.2 innings. Seven runs scored with Brown in the circle, including three home runs. Weddle came in as relief for 5.1 innings of work. Four runs came in on 10 hits with Weddle in the circle.

The Highlanders will conclude their regular season on Sunday against Longwood at 1 p.m. Sunday's finale will be senior day, as Radford honors Mackenzie Blackwell and Kelsey Weddle and their careers donning the Red and White.

GAME ONE :: Five Innings
LONGWOOD 15 :: RADFORD 4
Longwood struck first in the opening inning with a pair of runs coming across. Justina Augustine led off with a walk and stole second before Jamie Barbour singled into left-centerfield to score the runner. After advancing to second on the throw, Barbour moved to third on a fly ball and made the trip home on a wild pitch back to the backstop.

After the Highlanders were held off the scoreboard in their opening stanza, the Lancers extended the deficit to three on a home run hit to centerfield by Glenn Walters. Longwood loaded the bases on a single, error and walk for Megan Baltzell, who brought two of the runners in on a double ripped to right field.

Trailing 5-0 in the second, Robinson put Radford on the board with an RBI single hit up the middle to score Rowe from third. Rowe reached on a single to left and moved around the base path on a walk by Alex Lang and a wild pitch. Chiles batted in the Highlanders second run of the side, beating out the throw to first to bring Lang across.

The Lancers responded in the third with a two-run homer by Walters, her second long ball of the day. A third run in the inning came into score on a double skied off the wall in right field by Augustine. The Red and White's second error of the game led to another tally for Longwood. Augustine stole third, but an errant throw rolled toward the third base dugout allowing for the runner to come home. The Lancers second home run of the inning scored three and ended the frame, 12-2, in the visitor's favor.

Radford added a run in the third off Rowe's second hit of the day and eighth double of the year. Rowe's shot off the left-centerfield wall scored Kayla Bishton, who after reaching on a single into right field.

Longwood continued to swing the bat, hitting its fourth home run of the game. Taylor Hedrick, in her first at bat of the day, lined a shot over the wall toward the scoreboard. Baltzell scored a third run in the side for the Lancers on a single down the right field line.

In a 15-3 hole coming into the fourth inning, Robinson launched her third home run of the season to lead off the inning.
 
GAME TWO
LONGWOOD 11 :: RADFORD 5
Longwood opened the game's scoring in the first inning with a three-run homer off the bat of Emily Murphy, her second in the doubleheader and the Lancers fifth on the day. After loading the bases on an error, walk and single, a walk by Casey Lifsey notched a fourth run for Longwood.

Chelsea Sciacca added to the lead in the second with a two-RBI home run skied over left-centerfield. Walters followed up the long ball with her third of the day to put the Lancers ahead 7-0.

The Highlanders' deficit grew to 8-0 on an RBI single by Jamie Barbour to the right side that scored one.

In the fourth inning, Lifsey lifted a short fly ball into shallow centerfield to score the game's ninth run for Longwood. Carly Adams was the runner that came in to score after reaching on a single.

Burns tallied Radford's first run in the fourth on a long, fly ball that nearly cleared the wall in left field. Bishton scored after reaching on a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. Blackwell came into score in the next at bat after reaching first on a walk. Robinson scored Blackwell on a fielder's choice bunt.

Baltzell pushed the Lancers' lead back to eight on a solo-homer sent to right field. It was her 24th long ball of the season and Longwood's seventh of the day. Sciacca followed it with her second home run of the day.

Rowe, already with a double on the day, hit her sixth home run of the year bring the Highlanders with seven, 11-4. The homer scored Honaker from first who reached on a single chopped to second.

With her second double of the outing, Burns scored Blackwell from first to cut the deficit to six and round out the scoring.
