RU RECORDS 30TH WIN WITH 9-4 TRIUMPH OVER WEST VIRGINIA

|

RADFORD, Va. - Patrick Marshall hit his eighth home run of the season and drove in his 40th run of the season, and Zack Ridgely (3-1) allowed an unearned run in his best start of the season to earn the victory as Radford (30-14) won its 30th game for the third straight season, 9-4 on Wednesday over West Virginia (24-19) at RU Baseball Stadium.

Marshall's home run, an opposite field solo shot in the second, gave Radford a lead it would not relinquish, and gave WVU starter Conner Dotson (0-4) the loss despite working just 2.0 innings on a staff day that included eight pitchers for the Mountaineers. Marshall finished the day 4-5 with two doubles as well. His RBI was a Big South-leading 40th of the season.

"It was good to see Marshall have a great day and use the opposite side of the field to get his bat going again," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said.

As good as Marshall and the Highlanders were on the offensive end, pounding out a total of 13 hits, including five doubles and a homer, Ridgely was equally impressive on the mound. The freshman midweek starter matched his season high with 6.0 innings logged and won for the third time in five starts. He has not lost since March 3 at ETSU, a string of 10 appearances. On this day, he allowed five hits, an unearned run, and struck out a career high nine batters.

"Ridgely did what he does," Raccuia said. "I really like the way he competes on the mound. He is a quiet, unsung kid who keeps grinding out innings for us."

Brad Keen's two-run double in the fifth gave Radford a 3-0 lead. Keen finished the day 2-4. Danny Hrbek's single drove in a run in the sixth to give RU a 4-1 edge after WVU pushed across a run on a passed ball in the top half.

The Highlanders broke open the game with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Shane Johnsonbaugh drove in a pair of runs, and Josh Reavis and Hunter Higgerson each added RBI singles for the victors.

A bunch of guys put some good swings on the baseball in good counts and drove in some runs," Raccuia said. "This was a good W."

Radford stretched its overall record to a school-record 16 games above .500. The Highlanders host James Madison on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the first of a three-game non-conference series against the Dukes. Friday and Saturday's games in the series will be played in Radford, while Sunday's finale is on the road at JMU.
