HIGHLANDER BATS COME ALIVE IN 22-1 WIN OVER JMU

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford (31-14) scored a season-high 22 runs on 19 hits, including a pair of three-run home runs from Josh Reavis and Jordan Taylor, in a 22-1 romp over in-state rival James Madison (16-26) on Friday at RU Baseball Stadium. The Highlanders led 17-0 by the end of the fourth inning and cruised to the series opening victory. Michael Boyle (7-2) earned the win in a scheduled short start with the non-league opponent.

RU scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Hunter Higgerson, and Reavis added a two-run triple and then scored on a Patrick Marshall sac fly to make it 4-0 after two innings. The Highlanders extended the lead with seven more runs in the third and six in the fourth. The final runs of the night came when Taylor hit his first career home run in the eighth to cap a five-run inning.

Chad Carroll's RBI double plated the only run of the night for the Dukes. It came in the top of the eighth inning. Eric Yankey (1-4) lasted just 2.1 innings and allowed nine runs of seven hits for JMU.

"Games don't happen like this very often," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "I am glad we played well and put some good swings on the baseball. We need to get ready to play tomorrow. You cannot take anything for granted.  I think this team is ready for the challenge to take each game one at a time."

The Highlanders pounded out seven extra base hits, including two doubles by Higgerson to push his Big South leading total to 22 on the season. He and Marshall are now tied atop the league statistics in RBI with 41 on the year.

Boyle threw 77 pitches in a controlled start and went 4.1 innings before leaving with a 17-0 lead to earn his seventh win of the season. Travis McQueen, Jeff Maxwell, and Kyle Zurak each appeared in relief. The lone JMU run came off Maxwell, who stepped on the mound for the first time since March 11 vs. Youngstown State. The staff combined for 11 strikeouts with just four walks.

Radford had four players (Reavis, Marshall, Higgerson, Chris Coia) with at least three hits in the game, and another three (Shane Johnsonbaugh, Taylor, Danny Hrbek) batters with two hits. Three Highlanders (Johnsonbaugh, Reavis, Coia) scored four runs apiece.

The two teams will continue the series Saturday at RU Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m.
