THOMAS LEADS GROUP OF TOP-10 FINISHERS ON OPENING DAY OF VERTKLASSE MEETING

HIGH POINT, N.C.. ---- Madeline Thomas led a group of top-10 finishers for Radford on day one of the VertKlasse Meeting at the Belk Track at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C., on Friday night with a first-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Four different Highlanders finished in the top 10 of their respective events on the opening day.

With both the men and women starting the 10,000-meter run at once, Thomas crossed the line in eighth overall and was the first female runner to finish. Thomas recorded a time of 38:54.72 in the first 10K race of her career. On the men's side, Radford's Brady Guertin took third with a time of 33:16.96.

Shania Williams' mark of 13.05m (42-09.75) earned her eighth-place honors in the shot put. Williams has finished inside the top 10 in the event at each competition she has entered this outdoor season. Her season best of 13.47m (44- 02.50) came at the USF Invite on March 12

Courtney Rice and Courtney Burton rounded out the top 10 of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, turning in times of 12:09.43 and 12:25.54, respectively.

In the 1,500-meter run, Malina Richardson took 12th in her heat and 24th overall with a time of 4:58.19.

As the lone Highlander in the 5,000-meter run, Emily Marshall clocked a 19:41.70. Marshall's performance set a new personal-season best, beating her time of 19:56.45 at the Adidas Winthrop Invite last week.Â

Saturday's action starts off with the 800 meters on the track at 10 a.m. and the long jump at 11 a.m. The bulk of competition is scheduled for Saturday. The final field event of the weekend will be the discus at 4 p.m., with the meet concluding around 5:10 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
