RU SETS SCHOOL RECORD WITH WIN AT TECH, HEADS TO VMI ON TUESDAY

|

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Radford set the school record for consecutive wins at nine and snapped an eight-game losing streak to Virginia Tech (17-17) on Monday night at English Field. The Highlanders (20-11) scored 10 times in the eighth inning after the Hokies had come back from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead. The go-ahead runs came on a two-run triple from Chris Coia. Radford won the game 15-7.

Radford scored in each of the first four innings to build a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth. Shane Johnsonbaugh's RBI ground out gave RU a 1-0 lead in the first. Brad Keen singled home a run in the second, and Josh Reavis drove in a run with a sac fly in the third. After Hunter Higgerson doubled to open the fourth, a Josh Gardiner single brought him home, and Keen drove in another run with a bunt single.

The Hokies responded in the bottom of the fourth cutting the lead to a single run on a grand slam home run by Mac Caples. Tech tied the game with a run in the fifth and then took the lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Daniel Bridgeman (3-2) came out of the bullpen to get the final out of the seventh with a pair of Hokie runners left on base. He earned the win going 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

Radford immediately bounced back with its biggest offensive inning of the season.

"It was good to see us not panic when we were down a run," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "This place has been an Achilles Heel for us in the past, but tonight I didn't see any panic when we lost the lead. Bridgeman got us out of a jam and then our bats came to life with some big at-bats in the eighth."

The Highlanders scored 10 runs on seven hits in the inning. Coia's two-run triple gave Radford the lead. Danny Hrbek's double drove in two more runs, and Keen pushed his RBI total to four on the night with a two-run single. Coia drove in another run in the half inning to highlight the offensive attack.

Radford travels Tuesday to VMI for a non-conference tilt with the Keydets.
