WINNING STREAK REACHES DOUBLE FIGURES AT VMI

|

LEXINGTON, Va. - Radford (21-11) won its 10th straight game Tuesday with a 6-2 decision over VMI (9-17) at Gray-Minor Stadium. Eight of RU's school record streak have come on the road. Austin Ross (2-0) retired 13 of the 14 batters he faced in a relief appearance to earn the victory on the mound for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders took control of the game from the onset. Josh Gardiner line the first pitch of the game into the left field corner for a double and later scored to give RU a 1-0 lead in the first. He again led off a scoring inning in the third with a walk and stolen base. Shane Johnsonbaugh's double made it 2-0 and quickly 3-0 when he later stole third and scored on a defensive error on the play. After a Hunter Higgerson double, Danny Hrbek drove in the run with a single to make it 4-0.

The early offense was all the help the Radford pitching staff would need. Tyler Swarmer went 3.2 innings in a controlled start and allowed two runs on three hits before giving way to Ross, who was nearly perfect in 4.1 innings, in the fourth. Ryan Meisinger struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning appearance in a non-save situation.

"I was glad to see Swarmer get a start and pitch well," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "He reached his pitch count, and Ross came in and was dominant. We were very business-like tonight with some timely hits and another solid defensive effort. That remains the recipe for winning games."

After VMI cut the lead in half with single runs in the third and fourth, Radford added two runs in the sixth to keep the Keydets at arm's length for the remainder of the night. The Keydets scored their runs on a solo home run from Thomas Stallings and an RBI base hit from Matt Winn. VMI starter Matthew Eagle (0-4) took the loss on the mound and lasted just 2.1 innings. VMI used six pitchers on the night with none going more than 2.2 innings.

Aaron Scoville drove in the fifth run of the night for RU with a bases loaded walk, and Johnsonbaugh carded his second RBI with a sac fly to plate the final run of the game.

Four Highlanders recorded multiple hits (Johnsonbaugh 2-3; Gardiner 2-3; Chris Coia 2-3; Higgerson 2-4) in a 10-hit attack for the victors. Radford pitching held the Keydets to just five hits with 10 strikeouts.

Radford returns home and to Big South play facing Winthrop at RU Baseball Stadium. The three-game weekend series begins Friday at 6:30 p.m.
