BROWN’S COMPLETE GAME EXTINGUISHES FLAMES IN SERIES FINALE, 4-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. ---- Tiffany Brown's one run, two-hit effort powered Radford past Liberty on Sunday at the Liberty Softball Stadium in Lynchburg, Va., 4-1. Nia Chiles led the Highlanders at the plate with two RBI and two extra base hits.

"This win helps our confidence and feeling that we are working as a team going into a big series this weekend," said head coach Maggie White. "Tiffany (Brown) stepped up when given a big opportunity. She pitched an amazing game and has been working hard. She made adjustments over the past week and it was apparent in her performance today."

Becky Mantel's on-base streak grew to 16 consecutive games after leading the game off with a single over the shortstop's head. Mantel finished the day 2-4 with a run. Nia Chiles went 2-3, highlighted by her second triple of the season in the second inning and a double in the seventh.

Brown threw her third complete game of the season, holding the Flames (19-21, 8-7 BSC) to one run on just two hits. She matched her career high with eight strikeouts. Brown punched out right batters back on March 1 against Central Arkansas in a complete game effort. Brown's 143-pitch day earned her the second win of her career.

The Red and White outhit Liberty 7-2 in the series finale, scoring runs in the first, second and seventh innings.

The Highlanders (10-20, 5-6 BSC) jumped out on top first for the second time in the series, scoring on a single hit by Casey Burns down the right side. Burns' shot gave Mantel the opportunity to come across home plate as the Flames' defense was unable to make the out at first.

Chiles extended Radford's lead in the second inning to 3-0 with a base-clearing triple hit to left-centerfield. Kayla Bishton led the frame off with a walk. Mackenzie Blackwell laid down a bunt that the Liberty defense was unable to play that moved Bishton to second. Summer Robinson put both runners in scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before Chiles stepped up to the plate.

The Flames cut into the lead in the bottom of the third. Jessica Cicerchia walked to put a runner on base for Alexia Taylor, who put a ball just in front of the diving Blackwell from left for a double.

The Highlanders pushed their lead back to three runs in the top of the seventh inning on a wild pitch by Chandler Ball. After a pop up from Summer Robinson, Chiles notched her second extra base hit of the game for a one-out double. An ensuing single by Mantel and walk by Megan Honaker loaded the bases, giving Chiles the opportunity to make the trip from third to home on the wild pitch to Maggie Rowe.

Radford resumes Big South play this weekend at Coastal Carolina. Saturday's doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m., with Sunday's finale schedule for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
