JOHNSONBAUGH, RIGGS GO YARD TO SWEEP CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

RADFORD, Va. ---- For the second-consecutive game, Shane Johnsonbaugh and Trevor Riggs cranked home runs as No. 25 Radford won its 36th contest of 2015. The Highlanders completed the sweep of Charleston Southern with a 6-2 victory on Sunday at the Radford Baseball Stadium.

"We put a few good swings on the baseball, but we were not great offensively," said head Joe Raccuia. "Johnsonbaugh's home run got us on board, and Riggs' bolt extended the lead. Mitchell (MacKeith) really commanded the outside of the plate after the first few innings. He didn't have his best stuff but grinded it out. (Austin) Ross came out and gave us some good innings, and I am proud of him."

I am proud of the sweep. Charleston Southern is a really good baseball team. They pitch and play defense really well. I am proud of our guys, and we are sad to see the home season end. The home atmosphere has been really good for us, and we enjoy playing here. Obviously we took care of business at home."

Patrick Marshall paced Radford (36-14, 17-4 BSC) with two hits on the day. Johnsonbaugh and Riggs both notched home runs in the effort, their second game clearing the fence in as many days. Johnsonbaugh had a team-high two RBI, while Riggs, Brad Keen and Danny Hrbek batted in one run each.

Mitchell MacKeith threw seven innings in his 13th start of the season. MacKeith struck out three batters in the win, holding the Bucs (22-25, 9-12 BSC) to just two earned runs on eight hits. Kyle Palmer made an appearance in relief before Austin Ross came in for 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out two.

Radford jumped in front in the bottom of the opening frame with one run. Johnsonbaugh led off with a walk and scurried onto third on a single launched into right-centerfield by Josh Reavis. The Highlanders loaded the bases for the first time on the afternoon once Patrick Marshall looked at ball four. Coming off a career day in game two, Hrbek scored the first run on a high-sac fly hit to left field, giving Johnsonbaugh time to tag up and score.

Johnsonbaugh extended the lead to 3-0 in the second on his third long ball in four games. The leadoff-hitter's shot over right-centerfield scored Riggs, who reach after getting hit by a pitch.

Charleston Southern put itself on the board in the third inning on an RBI-single hit up the middle by Bryan Dye. The RBI swing scored Nate Blanchard, who reached on a double down the left field line.

The Highlanders pushed their lead to four after tallying a pair of runs in the third inning. Hunter Higgerson was brought around the base path after a throwing error at short put runners on second and third, and gave him enough time to make the trip home. In the following at bat, Keen singled to centerfield to bring across Aaron Scoville to put Radford ahead 5-1.

The Bucs' Chris Singleton wasted no time in responding in the fourth, leading off with a home run over the wall in left-centerfield.

Riggs put the Red and White back out on top 6-2 on his second home run in as many outings, skying a no-doubter over the wall in left field.

Radford closes out its 2015 regular season schedule at UNC Asheville next weekend. Game one of the series will be on Thursday, May 14, at 6 p.m.
