VEATCH MAKES NCAA EAST PRELIM DEBUT IN HAMMER

RADFORD, Va. ---- Ashlen Veatch of the Radford Track and Field team travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for the 2015 NCAA East Preliminaries. Veatch notched a top-48 performance in the hammer throw to qualify and will compete in the discipline on Saturday, May 30.

Veatch's personal-best heave of 56.54m (185-06.00) recorded at the Tennessee Challenge on May 2 proved to be the 44th best throw in the hammer in the east region. She will be competing in the first of three flights on Saturday.

The Roanoke, Va., native is the first Highlander to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries since 2011, when Nikki Roseberry did so in the high jump. Veatch is the first to make the list in the hammer since her sister, Aimee, did so in 2009 and 2010.

The east preliminary will be hosted by North Florida and the City of Jacksonville at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. A schedule of events can be found at the link above. The women's hammer throw will be contested at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30.

The top-48 student-athletes in each event in both the east and west regions qualify for the NCAA Preliminary round. The top-12 competitors in each discipline will advance to the NCAA finals at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., from June 10-13.
