HIGGERSON'S DOUBLES LEADS RADFORD TO PROGRAM RECORD 34th WIN

RADFORD, Va. ---- Radford set the all-time program record for wins in a single season with a 7-2 victory over Charleston Southern in the series opener on Friday night at the Radford Baseball Stadium. Hunter Higgerson notched two doubles to break the Highlanders' record for doubles in a season with 24.

"Hunter (Higgerson) and Patrick (Marshall) had some big swings on the baseball and that is what middle of the lineup guys do, they drive home runs," said head coach Joe Raccuia. "Michael Boyle grinded out innings and kept us in the baseball game. We need to be cleaner defensively a little bit, but it is a matter of getting crucial hits and having a guy on the mound commanding the strike zone, going after the hitter."

Higgerson finished the day 2-4 at the dish with a game-high three RBI. He found himself standing on second after both of his hits. Higgerson's 24 doubles this season moves him into sole possession of the program record set back in 1995. Patrick Marshall notched two RBI on his team-leading 10th home run of the year. Josh Reavis and Marshall came across home plate on two occasions each to pace the Red and White.

Radford (34-14, 15-4 BSC) opened the series with a 1-2-3 inning by Michael Boyle on the mound. Boyle went 7.2 innings in the opener with four strikeouts. He held the Bucs (22-23, 9-10 BSC) to just four hits, giving up two runs in the 106-pitch effort. Daniel Bridgeman entered the game

The nationally ranked Highlanders struck first with a two-run shot by Marshall over right-centerfield. Reavis looked at ball four to put one on for Marshall's team-best 10th long ball of the campaign.

The Bucs responded in the top of the second with one run. Boyle issued a pair of free bases before Chris Singleton hit a single past the diving shortstop to bring one runner in.

Higgerson gave Radford a four-run edge in the fourth on his team-best 23rd double of the season. Coia led off the frame with a single through the left side before Johnsonbaugh cranked a hard hit ball down the right side past the first baseman for a double. Marshall battled off several foul balls before being struck by a pitch in the shoulder to load the bases for Higgerson's three-RBI plate appearance.

Trevor Riggs padded the lead coming home on a passed ball in the seventh inning. Riggs reached on a walk, and he moved to third on a single and groundout.

Charleston Southern put up a tally in the eighth after Nate Blanchard led off with a double to left-centerfield. Bryan Dye's single to right brought the run home, cutting the visitor's deficit to 6-2.

The Highlanders put up one more run in the eighth. Reavis singled to right-center before stealing second. Marshall walked to put two on base before Higgerson moved both into scoring position on a bunt down the third baseline. Danny Hrbek's single to right field scored Reavis. An ensuing walk loaded the bases yet again for the Red and White.

Radford returns on Saturday for game two against Charleston Southern from the Radford Baseball Stadium at 4 p.m. Dylan Nelson (6-3, 3.44) will be on the mound for the Highlanders against the Bucs' Evan Raynor (4-4, 2.77).
