WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO DAVIDSON IN EXHIBITION

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team saw its first action of the season at Cupp Stadium on Saturday evening, dropping a 3-0 decision to Davidson in its final exhibition contest.
The game was scoreless at halftime as the Highlanders recorded the final five shots of the stanza to lead 8-7 in that category at the break.
Davidson got on the scoreboard in the 68th minute as Sarah Tuggle converted a throughpass up the middle by Vicky Bruce. The Wildcats then added goals over the next six minutes to complete the scoring.
Radford totaled eight shots in the second half as well to finish the game with a 16-11 advantage. The Highlanders also totaled four corner kicks, while the Wildcats had three.
Sophomore Katie McCormick played the entire match in goal for Radford and made four saves, including a leaping tip over the crossbar in the opening half. Junior defender Miranda Carlson also saved a goal in the opening 45 minutes, clearing a shot off the line early in the game.
Offensively, senior forward Asyia Mitchell and freshman Abby Gardner each totaled three shots. Mitchell put two of hers on goal, including one that required a leaping save by the Davidson keeper at the right post. Senior Shannon Nasca also had two attempts on goal, both in the first half, including one that forced a tip over the crossbar.
Gardner was among four freshmen to start the game for Radford, along with Jessica Wollmann, Jasmine Casarez and Alyssa Rodriguez.
The Highlanders open the 2015 regular season Friday at 7 p.m. as they take on Howard at Cupp Stadium.
