HIGHLANDER WOMEN START SEASON WITH 4-2 VICTORY

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team started off the 2015 season with a bang Friday night, scoring four first-half goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Howard at Cupp Stadium.

Sophomore Jordan Lundin and freshman Jane Everett each tallied one goal and one assist, while freshmen Jasmine Casarez and Jessica Wollmann netted the other goals. Juniors Miranda Carlson and Hannah Duff each notched one assist.

"It was a great team effort tonight," said Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi after notching his 198th victory with the program. "I thought we were prepared and organized. I liked that we scored on three set pieces and thought we had a lot of good play from a lot of individuals."

The Highlanders outshot Howard, 31-7, in the game and wasted little time getting on the board as Casarez found the net just under two minutes in on the team's first attempt of the season. Casarez received a nice throughpass up the middle by Carlson and one-touched the ball past the drawn out Howard goalkeeper.

The Bison evened the score in the ninth minute as Whitney White put home a rebound in front after a save by Katie McCormick. Both teams then narrowly missed chances as McCormick tipped a long Howard shot off the crossbar for the save and a header by senior Asyia Mitchell went off the post.

Radford then dominated the final 15 minutes of the half, beginning with Everett's goal that made it 2-1 in the 31st minute. Lundin sent a low corner kick inside the six-yard box and Everett deflected the ball with her foot into the left side.

Less than seven minutes later, Lundin capitalized on another corner kick, as her ball slipped by a Howard defender inside the near post and into the right corner of the net.

Wollman then capped the first half with her goal in the final minute. Everett started the play with a free kick from the Highlanders' defensive half and Duff headed the ball ahead to Wollman, who one-touched it into the top of the goal from just inside the box.

In the first half alone, the Highlanders racked up 18 shots, put eight of them on goal and generated eight corners. They finished the match with 10 shots on net and 11 corners, compared to just four shots on goal and three corners for Howard. The Bison got their second goal early in the second half, but Radford regained control and dictated play the rest of the way.

Casarez led the Highlanders with eight shots in the game, putting three on goal. Wollman and Shannon Nasca each totaled four shots, while Lundin and Mitchell recorded three apiece. McCormick recorded two saves.

Radford remains at home to take on East Tennessee State Monday at 7 p.m.
