RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to College of Charleston Sunday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.
The Highlanders fell to 2-2 on the season, while College of Charleston improved to 2-1, with its lone loss coming to a ranked Clemson team.
Following an overtime victory over VCU on Friday night, the Cougars struck early on Sunday as Laura Ortega scored in the sixth minute on a counterattack. They made it 2-0 in the 71st minute on a goal by Nicole Koretsky and capped the scoring in the 89th minute.
Sophomore Jordan Lundin had the Highlanders' best scoring chance in the opening half, as her free kick from 20 yards out in the 33rd minute sailed just over the crossbar. With an early shot on goal by sophomore Sammie Shifflette, Radford created more opportunities in the second half, recording seven of its 11 shots. With the score still 1-0 in the 66th minute, junior Hannah Duff's deflection of a Lundin corner was just wide. Shortly after, Jasmine Casarez got a shot off inside the box, but the College of Charleston goalkeeper made the save. Casarez and Shifflette each had two shots on goal.
The Cougars recorded 19 shots in the game and put eight on goal. Sophomore Katie McCormick made five saves for the Highlanders, including several on point-blank shots to keep it a one-goal game much of the way.
"I thought we came out a little bit flat," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "Defensively, we missed some assignments and have to be a little bit better. Attacking-wise we weren't dangerous enough. We're going to work on some things this week and have a good week of practice and we'll be ready for Friday."
The Highlanders will be return to the field at Cupp Stadium on Friday night when they play host to in-state foe VMI for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
