RADFORD, Va. – Radford baseball head coach Joe Raccuia announced Wednesday afternoon Jason Walck has joined his coaching staff as an assistant coach. Walck comes to the New River Valley following five seasons with USC Aiken.
Â
In his role with the Highlanders, Walck will be the recruiting coordinator, hitting coach and work primarily with the catchers. He will also serve as bench coach during game days.
Â
"I am beyond excited to welcome Jason, Lauren and Tessa to the Radford baseball family," Raccuia said. "He has a proven track record of recruiting and developing his own players. The work he has done at USC Aiken speaks for itself. The stats and the draft picks in recent years were a direct reflection of his time there. Our players will benefit from his maturity and passion for the game."
Â
At USC Aiken, Walck was the Pacers' hitting coach. Despite a rash of injuries, Walck led the team to a .338 batting average in 2015. The squad totaled 635 hits and 8.7 runs per outing. The Pacers improved upon their numbers from the previous year as the squad also blasted 52 home runs and accounted for 922 total bases.
Â
"I am honored and grateful to be joining the Radford baseball program," Walck noted. "Coach Raccuia and his staff have built a nationally-ranked program, and I can't thank them enough for this opportunity. The energy and excitement around this program is second to none, and I can't wait to hit the ground running."
Â
During the 2014 season, Walck guided the squad to finish fourth nationally in triples (23), eighth in hits (611) and scoring (7.8), 11th in home runs (44) and runs (414), and 18th in batting average (.322). In 2013, the Pacer offense ranked third nationally in hits, and they ranked in the top-15 nationally in batting average, runs and scoring.
Â
Prior to working at USC Aiken, Walck spent three seasons with the University of New Orleans coaching staff. For his final two seasons with the Privateers, Walck served as the first base coach and worked with the hitters and infielders. A total of nine Privateer hitters were drafted during Walck's tenure, including Johnny Giavotella (second round), who played 47 games for the Kansas City Royals in 2011.
Â
Outside of the collegiate ranks, Walck served three seasons as head coach of the Silver Springs Thunderbolts in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League. Walck also served as an assistant coach for the Bourne Braves of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in 2009.
Â
Walck, a native of Waynesboro, Pa., graduated from Shepherd University in 2005 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. As a player, he was a four-year letterwinner at shortstop, earning two NCAA regional appearances and a WVIAC conference championship in 2004.
Â
Walck and his wife, Lauren, have one daughter, Tessa Marie.
