Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

HIGHLANDERS DROP 1-0 DECISION ON LATE OVERTIME GOAL

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a defensive struggle for nearly 110 minutes, Tennessee Tech found the back of the net in the final seconds to come away with a 1-0 win over the Radford women's soccer team Sunday afternoon.

The defeat was the first of the season on the road for the Highlanders (4-3), while Tennessee Tech (2-3-2) extended its unbeaten streak to four games.

It appeared Radford was headed for its first draw of the year – and the Golden Eagles for their third consecutive – until they capitalized on a last ditch attempt. Lauren Brewer sent a ball from the right side into the middle of the box and Tech's Mayra Manzanal got a head on it and deflected into the top right corner for the game-winner.

The goal provided a stunning ending to a game in which quality scoring chances for both teams were few and far between. Radford finished with 16-15 edge in shots, but most of the attempts on either side were either off the mark or resulted in routine saves.

The Highlanders had the better opportunities beginning with Asyia Mitchell's shot that went off the crossbar in the 18th minute. She made a run up the left side on a nice lead ball by sophomore McKensey Ziegler and fired a shot from the left wing toward the far post, but the senior forward had an attempt carom off the bar for the third straight game.

In the second half, Jordan Lundin put a free kick from just outside the box on goal, but Tennessee Tech keeper Kari Naerdemann made the save. The reigning OVC Defensive Player of the Week made an even better stop with under 13 minutes to play, diving to her right to deflect a shot from Abby Gardner from 22 yards out.

Like Naerdemann, Radford goalkeeper Katie McCormick recorded six saves in the game. Each team generated just three corner kicks. Tennessee Tech has allowed one goal or fewer in each of its last six matches.

"It was a pretty even game and I thought we played very hard and were unlucky not to get the game-winner before 90 minutes," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "They scored a brilliant goal in the end. We got beat by a great goal and didn't give it away so our heads are high."

Mitchell led the Highlanders with three shots, while Lundin put both of hers on frame and Ana Revollo also had two attempts.

Radford returns home to begin a three-game homestand and play its final non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 18 against Southern Virginia. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Cupp Stadium, with the Highlander men's team to follow with a match against Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
