SCORING SUMMARY

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Evan Szklennik and Sergio Arzubiaga scored their first goals of the season off corners in the first half to propel Radford to a 2-1 victory over Appalachian State in non-conference men's soccer action Friday night from Cupp Stadium.
  • Szklennik rose up and redirected a corner from Jakob Strandsäter in the 15th minute.
  • In the 37th minute, Radford capitalized on another corner kick when Strandsäter connected with Arzubiaga for the Highlanders' second goal of the game.
  • Ian Bennett pulled the Mountaineers within one following his strike from the top of the box in the 83rd minute.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RU won its sixth straight meeting against App State. The Highlanders boast an 11-7-1 all-time record in the series.
  • Szklennik scored for the first time since his two-goal outburst against Campbell in the quarterfinals of the Big South men's soccer tournament last year, bringing his career total to three.
  • Arzubiaga netted his first goal since Nov. 12, 2013 at Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals of the Big South tournament.
  • Strandsäter became the first Highlander to record two assists in a game since Fraser Colmer dished out two dimes in a 5-0 win at Longwood on Oct. 8, 2014.
  • Radford scored on two of its three corners in the game.
  • RU outshot its opponent for the sixth time this season, gaining a 22-13 advantage over the Mountaineers.
  • Krzysztof Nalborski led all Highlanders with four shots.

QUOTABLE
  • "This was a good team win. I thought we played pretty well for the majority of the game. We certainly created a ton of chances and are disappointed not to have scored more, considering we had 22 shots. However, App State is incredibly tough to play against, and again, it was a small margin that separated the two teams in the end. We know Marshall will be another hard contest, and we need to maximize our chances of success with great practices and preparations from now until Tuesday night. Thank you once again to all the students and community who came out tonight. I thought it was a great atmosphere." ~ Radford head coach, Marc Reeves

UP NEXT
  • The Highlanders welcome Marshall to Cupp Stadium for Tuesday's non-conference battle, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
