RADFORD, Va. – Cameron Jones helped give Radford a big lead and made sure the Highlanders didn't give it away Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 35 points in a 78-66 Big South men's basketball victory over Campbell.

Jones shot 12 of 19 from the field and hit a career-high six 3-pointers on nine attempts, but perhaps his two biggest plays came after Campbell had cut a 24-point RU advantage down to six with just over six minutes left in the game. He got a steal near midcourt and converted it into a layup and then hit his final 3-pointer on the next possession, pushing the cushion back to double-digits and putting the game out of reach.

Senior teammate Rashun Davis made his own bit of history in the game, recording six assists to become the fourth player in program history with 400 for his career. Davis, the Big South's active leader now with 402, joined former Highlanders Amir Johnson, Anthony Walker and Whit Holcomb-Faye, while adding 10 points in the game.

Radford got off to a good start, scoring the game's first seven points and hitting six of its first nine shots to take a 14-6 lead at the first media timeout. Jones tallied seven points in the early going, YaYa Anderson made a 3-pointer and Brandon Holcomb and Ed Polite, Jr. each added baskets inside.

Campbell cut the deficit to five just past the midway point of the half, but the Highlanders then held the Fighting Camels scoreless for almost eight minutes. Radford went on a 12-0 spurt during that time to build a 37-20 lead. The run started with a 3-pointer by Caleb Tanner and was capped by a trey from Jones. In between, Davis fed Polite, Jr. for a pair of easy baskets and scored himself off an assist by Justin Cousin. Campbell broke its drought with five straight points, but Jones finished off the half in style, grabbing a rebound, rushing up court and beating the buzzer with his fifth 3-pointer of the half to make it a 15-point advantage at the break.

RU carried the momentum into the second half, scoring 13 of the first 17 points to build the cushion to 53-29. From there, though, Campbell began to battle back, highlighted by a six-point possession on a pair of 3-pointers. Another 3-pointer shortly after cut the Radford lead to single digits at 59-50 with 9:55 left and the Camels' fourth trey of the half made it 63-57 before Jones halted the rally attempt.

The Highlanders remain at home for a rematch against Gardner-Webb on Saturday. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the first meeting 83-61 less than two weeks ago. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

QUOTABLE
  • "This game was one of our better performances coming out of the gate. I thought we came out aggressive on both ends of the floor, which was our main focus defensively. Our first half defense allowed us to really extend our lead. Campbell bounced back in the second half, but our guys held their composure to finish out the game. Cam [Jones] is very capable of this type of performance on given night. He is still learning how to be consistent and aggressive on offense, tonight showed his hard work. I would love to bottle tonight's effort up and use it every game. This team is learning how to be consistent, which is the biggest thing for us. The second half of the conference schedule is coming up and we really want to be clicking on all cylinders." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
