RADFORD, Va. – Radford remained unbeaten at home in Big South play, picked up an elusive second straight win and avenged its earlier loss to Gardner-Webb with a 69-59 victory Sunday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

Cameron Jones led four Highlanders in double figures with 17 points and Kion Brown came up big in the second half, scoring 12 of his 13. YaYa Anderson also tallied 13 points in the game, while Rashun Davis totaled 10 points and seven assists.

Radford notched back-to-back victories for the first time since Dec. 19 and moved over .500 in conference play for the first time since the league opener.

The Highlanders started strong, hitting three of their first four 3-point attempts and Jones and Anderson combined for 10 of the team's first 13 points as they took a 16-9 lead less than eight minutes in. Gardner-Webb chipped away at the deficit and eventually took a brief 28-27 edge on a 3-pointer with 3:39 left in the half. However, Davis gave the Highlanders a 36-31 halftime lead with an acrobatic layup and buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

The Runnin' Bulldogs scored five quick points to start the second half, but RU came back with an 8-0 run to build its largest advantage of the game to that point at 46-38. Brown got the spurt going with his first two baskets of the game, Davis added a layup and Jones hit a mid-range jumper.

From there, Gardner-Webb got within three on several occasions, but the Highlanders were able to answer each challenge. Leading 50-47, Brown scored four straight points again to build the cushion back to seven. It was 58-55 when Jones drained a 3-pointer with 5:42 left. Brandon Holcomb then followed a block on one end with a putback on the other to make it 63-56 with 3:42 to go. Anderson and Taj Owens then combined to seal the victory with six straight free throws in the last two minutes.

Radford heads out on the road for its next two games, beginning with Wednesday's matchup against in-state foe Longwood at 7 p.m. The Highlanders then play at Winthrop on Saturday.

QUOTABLE
  • "Coming off the last time we played these guys, I know it stuck in my craw how we played right out of the gate, and I think it stuck in our guys' craw as well. We allowed them a lot of easy shot opportunities in the first half and consequently we were down big. This game what I was looking for right out of the gate was for our level of focus and commitment on the defensive end and I thought we got that today. Guys were consistent throughout the game. I think the last couple of games we've started to be more consistent over the course of an entire game. Now we've got to go and prove that we can do it on the road." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
