ROCK HILL, S.C. – Radford saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as Winthrop pulled away in the last 12 minutes for an 87-77 decision on its homecourt, its seventh victory in a row.

Senior Brandon Holcomb tallied a career-high 18 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the field for the Highlanders. Rashun Davis added 15 points and recorded five assists, moving passed Whit Holcomb-Faye into third place on RU's career list with 418.

Radford trailed for much of the game, but battled back to tie it on three occasions in the second half, the last at 58-58 with 12:20 left. However, the Highlanders totaled just eight points in the subsequent eight and half minutes and Winthrop regained control with a 13-4 run. A driving layup by Kion Brown made it 73-66 with 6:01 to play, but the Eagles scored the next five points to push their advantage to double figures at the last media timeout.

The first half developed into a 3-point shooting contest with the teams combining for 15 3-pointers. Coming off its school-recording tying 17 against Charleston Southern, Winthrop remained hot, hitting five in the game's first eight minutes to open up a 22-11 lead. Radford tried its best to keep up as Rashun Davis and YaYa Anderson answered with ones of their own in a quick 8-0 run to cut the deficit. Christian Lutete then came off the bench to hit three straight shots, including a pair of 3's, but the Highlanders were unable to gain any ground on the scoreboard with Winthrop's Jimmy Gavin and Bjorn Broman on fire. The duo made eight of their 11 attempts from long-range in the opening 20 minutes. Gavin was 5 of 7 himself and 9 of 11 overall from the field for 23 points, including the last basket of the half to make it 48-42 advantage.

Radford has its final conference bye in the mid-week before returning to action Saturday when it hosts Coastal Carolina. Tipoff inside the Dedmon Center is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on American Sports Network

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Davis' 15 points moved him into 20th place on the program's career scoring list with 1,182.
  • Both teams shot over 50 percent in the opening half before cooling off in the second. Radford was shooting close over 55 percent for much of the game, before finished at 49 percent – 7 of 18 from 3-point range. Winthrop shot an even 50 percent, including 10 of 20 from beyond the arc.
  • The big difference came at the free-throw line as the Eagles attempted 40 and made 29, while the Highlanders were just 6 for 11.
  • After tying the game at 58, Radford made just two of its next eight shots, while committing four turnovers. Nine of Highlanders' 15 turnovers came in the second half.
  • Holcomb made his first seven shots of the game en route to his career-best scoring performance.
  • Cameron Jones scored 13 points to reach double figures for the sixth straight game.
  • Radford dominated the paint outscoring Winthrop 40-22 and holding a 38-29 rebounding advantage. Ed Polite, Jr. had a team-high seven – his seventh straight outing with at least that amount. Holcomb and Jones each had six.
  • At one point late in the first half, the teams had combined to make the same number of 2-point field goals and 3-pointers – 15. Each then had only one make from behind the arc in the second 20 minutes.
  • Gavin did not have a field goal in the second half and finished with 29 points. Keon Johnson scored 16, while Broman totaled 14. Xavier Cooks had all nine of his points in the second stanza to pick up the slack.
 QUOTABLE
  • "When the opponent is that good and playing on their home floor, your mistakes are magnified because they take advantage of it so much. We had a stretch where we didn't execute very well offensively and even though we played decent defense in the second half, they were still able to extend their lead and it just got a little bit away from us. They're playing the best right now, but we can certainly play with them. We have to be a little more detailed, but we're excited about an opportunity to play them again and excited about our chances as we go forward in the league. We've just got to learn from it and get back in the gym." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
