Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

ANDERSON, DAVIS AND 3-POINT BARRAGE LIFT RADFORD TO 80-73 VICTORY

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 80, Charleston Southern 73
  • Records: Radford (9-7, 2-2) | Charleston Southern (5-10, 1-3)
  • Location: Dedmon Center | Radford, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • YaYa Anderson scored a season-high 23 points and Radford drained a campaign-best 14 3-pointers while using a big second-half run to take an 80-73 win over Charleston Southern in Big South men's basketball play Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center.
  • Rashun Davis backed up his senior teammate with 20 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals.
  • Facing the conference leader in 3-point makes and attempts, the Highlanders turned the tables connecting on 10 3's in the first half alone and eventually tied a Dedmon Center-record with 37 attempts from behind the arc, hitting 38 percent of them.
  • However, the game was still tied at 55 with 12:34 left before RU embarked on a game-deciding 19-0 onslaught over a six-minute span. After a basket by Ed Polite, Jr. put the Highlanders in front for good, Davis turned a steal into a layup and Anderson fed Cameron Jones for an alley-oop dunk. Davis added four more points in the run, while Caleb Tanner hit two of his four 3-pointers and RU cruised from there despite going cold down the stretch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Anderson shot 8 for 14 from the field, including a season-best five 3-pointers on 11 attempts. The 23-point outing tied for the second-highest of his career and was his best scoring night since tallying 23 against Oregon State in the 2014 CBI.
  • Davis' nine assists were one short of his career-high and moved him into a tie with Rod Cousin for fourth-most in RU history with 383. His six rebounds equaled a career-best, while the 20-plus point game was his fifth of the season after recording four in his first three years.
  • Tanner was 4 of 7 on 3-point attempts to finish with 12 points. The freshman connected on four treys for the third time in four games.
  • With Davis adding three 3's and Justin Cousin contributing two, the 14 3-pointers for RU were two shy of the Dedmon Center record of 16, set against Morgan State in 1992 and equaled against VCU in 1998. The season-high total came despite leading 3-point shooter Jones failing to hit one in a game for just the second this season.
  • The Highlanders hit on 10 of 22 attempts from behind the arc in the first half before cooling off to 29 percent (4 of 14) in the second 20 minutes.
  • Charleston Southern, which came in ranked fifth in the NCAA in made 3-pointers, followed a similar trend, connecting on 8 of 14 in the first period before posting a 4 of 14 effort in the final 20 minutes.
  • Radford improved to 6-1 on the season coming off a defeat and also ended a four-game home losing streak to CSU.
  • Due to going scoreless over the last four minutes, RU's overall shooting percentage for the game fell to 43 percent, while the Buccaneers finished at 46 percent.
  • However, the Highlanders converted 12 CSU turnovers into 20 points, while tallying 15 points in transition.
  • Radford also had a 41-37 rebounding edge, including 13 on the offensive end. Six different Highlanders pulled down at least four boards, with Davis and Polite, Jr. leading the way with six.
  • Raemond Robinson led Charleston Southern with 15 points on five 3's. The Bucs, who were averaging just under 11 treys per game, totaled 12 on the night. However, Patrick Wallace, the Big South's top 3-point maker, had just two.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought our guys came out with unbelievable defensive intensity right from the beginning of the game and the biggest question for me was were we going to be able to maintain that for 40 minutes. Coming out of the locker room, those first few possessions of the second half I felt were the key to the game. We made some corrections on things that had enabled them to get 3's off in the first half and were able to start off with three or four stops in a row, and I thought that set the tone for the rest of the game. It's great that they were able to make some shots on the offensive end, but I thought our defense was the key to the game." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
