CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  –  Radford's attempted upset of No. 21 Virginia fell just short as Kieran Roberts' penalty kick in the 82nd minute was matched by a Pablo Aguilar goal in the 86th minute as the two defenses locked into an overtime stalemate, finishing in a 1-1 draw in the 12th meeting between the two Commonwealth foes.

The first half saw both squads combine for three shots with the Cavaliers firing both their shots seconds apart.

In the ninth minute, the Cavaliers received their best chance to go ahead earlier as Edward Opoku broke away from the RU defense for a one-on-one opportunity. Aitor Pouseu Blanco came off his line, blocking the Opoku shot. The deflection off the Pouseu Blanco save found the foot of Marcus Salandy-Defour, whose shot was blocked by Bismark Amofah.

Radford's only shot of the half came at the 13:02 mark as Wyatt Erzen fired a shot to the far right post, missing high.

The Highlanders received opportunities late in the half as Garland Smith used his speed against the Cavalier defense, but was unable to earn a decent look.

Midway through the second half, Jo Vetle Rimstad headed a cross on frame in the 61st minute, but the strong play between the pipes by Jeff Caldwell stopped Radford's best chance of a goal. Caldwell rose up and punched the Rimstad header over the crossbar.

In the 80th minute, Virginia held a 7-5 shot advantage with Aguilar taking four of the Cavalier shots.

Fraser Colmer sent a cross into the box meant for Victor Valls in the 82nd minute. Valls was fouled by a Cavalier defender as the redshirt-freshman was jumped up for the header.

Radford was awarded a penalty kick. Roberts' took the second penalty kick on the season for the Highlanders, firing a shot to the right corner post as Caldwell dived low, giving Radford a 1-0 lead with eight minutes left in regulation.

The Highlander defense had been spectacular all evening as Aguilar took an array of shots. In the 86th minute, his fifth shot found net on a touch pass from Raheem Taylor-Parkes off a Paddy Foss cross.

Neither team took a shot in the first overtime and the Highlanders outshot the Cavaliers 3-1 in the second 10 minutes.

Radford had an opportunity in the 108th minute as Evan Szklennik sent a cross into the box. Caldwell punched out the cross to Michael Walsh, who fired a shot, but Nicko Corriveau was able to get a body on the Walsh attempt.
