RADFORD, Va.  – As Radford men's soccer became the first team to sport the new athletic logo in competition, the Highlanders ended a five-match winless streak against Winthrop as a first half goal by Nick Mayhugh and second half tally from Jakob Strandsäter guided Radford to a 2-0 homecoming victory.

The first half saw only two shots, both coming from the Highlanders. The first shot came in the 10th minute as Taylor Martin's header off a Bismark Amofah cross missed just wide.

Radford's second shot came four minutes later as Mayhugh finished off a Amofah cross from the right side as the sophomore came sprinting into the middle of the box to finish off the cross for his first collegiate goal.

After the goal, both squads turned up the defensive intensity for the rest of the half, holding one another to no shots or corners.

One minute after halftime, Radford found itself another opportunity as Fraser Colmer sent a corner kick into the box. Looking for his third goal in as many games, Kieran Roberts' header hit off Kenneth Perkinson's gloves and the cross bar out of play.

It wasn't until the 47th minute that the Radford defense allowed a Winthrop shot attempt as Jogvan Jacobsen fired a bullet that missed right.

Strandsäter added the Highlanders' insurance goal in the 69th minute, finishing off an Evan Szklennik touch pass, which came off a blocked shot from the foot of Martin. Strandsäter's third goal on the year came from 15 yards out to the low left corner, just past a diving Perkinson.

In the 80th minute, Radford attempted four corners in a row, but was unable to add a third tally.

  • Nick Mayhugh becomes the 10th different Highlander to score a goal in 2016.
  • The second half goal marked the third goal on the season for Jakob Strandsäter.
  • Strandsäter paces the Highlanders with a team-high 10 points. The sophomore picked up his four assist of the season on the Mayhugh goal, feeding Bismark Amofah for the cross.
  • Radford finished with a 6-3 shot advantage and 8-0 corners edge.
  • The six shots are a season low.

QUOTABLE
  • "I think after playing a really physical and emotionally tough contest on Tuesday, our group bounced back for this important conference matchup. We came out with good intensity and held them to no shots in the first half. Tonight, we used some different guys and they gave us some quality minutes." ~ Radford head coach Marc Reeves.

UP NEXT
  • Radford will begin its stretch of two consecutive Big South road contests.
  • The Highlanders will have a week off to prepare for a Oct. 22 battle at High Point.
