RADFORD RESPONDS WITH DOMINANT 2-0 ROAD SHUTOUT

CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer team controlled play from start to finish while posting a season-high shots total in a 2-0 road victory over Presbyterian Saturday night.

Freshman Cynthia Brown scored her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute and Abby Gardner capped the scoring in the 50th as the Highlanders (7-6, 5-2) remained tied for first-place in the Big South, while surpassing their overall win total from last season.

Radford recorded 29 shots, including 18 in the first half, while the 15 attempts on goal in the match were also the most this season. Defensively, the Highlanders limited to Presbyterian to just seven attempts and one on goal

Coming off two tough overtime losses, Radford came out determined and firing at the start, recording the game's first eight shots in the opening 11 minutes. Jasmine Casarez, Cassidy Raliff and Nelia Perez each put the first three on goal, before Perez caromed one off the crossbar. Jessica Wollmann and Perez each forced Presbyterian keeper Alyssa Leaman to make two more saves and Ratliff had one go off the crossbar. By the time the first 15 minutes of play elapsed, Radford had recorded 10 shots.

Following a brief period of even play, the Highlanders picked up the attack again at the end of the half and were finally rewarded. After Casarez and Jordan Lundin added to the shots on goal total, Brown scored the eventual game-winner on the team's 17th attempt. The freshman pounced on a ball that deflected off Blue Hose defenders and put it into the top of the net.

Gardner then made it 2-0 on Radford's first shot of the second half, beating Leaman to a loose ball in front and scoring a goal for the second straight game.

Eight different Highlanders recorded multiple shots in the game, led by Perez with five. Casarez, Lundin and Ratliff each totaled four, while Wollmann and Brown each had three.

Presbyterian, meanwhile, was unable to mount any consistent attack and didn't get its lone shot on goal until a header attempt in the 76th minute, with Courtenay Kaplan making the save. Radford recorded its fifth shutout of the season, but first on the road after two earlier opportunities for clean sheets were spoiled with late goals.

"It was a good team effort," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "I'm proud of the team having a complete performance on the road. We played well for the full 90 minutes tonight."

Radford begins a challenging final week of the regular season by traveling to Liberty Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match. The Highlanders then play host to High Point for Senior Night on Saturday.
