MACON, Ga. – Radford was unable to manage a late inning comeback, dropping an 8-7 decision to Mercer in game two of their opening weekend series.

It was a pitchers duel early between Radford's Zack Ridgely and Mercer's Connor Herd, as both teams managed only one hit each in the first three innings of the ballgame.

The Highlanders blew the game wide open in the top of the fourth, loading the bases. Zach Duff got the Highlanders on the board, earning his first collegiate RBI on a bases loaded walk. Chandler Davis followed with a two-RBI single up the middle, picking up his first hit and RBI as a Highlander. Chris Coia gave RU a 4-0 lead on a two-out RBI single to second base.

Mercer finally got its offense going in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs with two outs in the inning. Danny Edgeworth got the Bears on the board with a single to leftfield and Kyle Lewis followed with two-run single up the middle.

Adding insurance runs in the sixth on a Zach York RBI groundout and the seventh on a Colby Higgerson RBI single, Radford controlled a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Bears knotted the game at six in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs on three hits, tying the game on a Jackson Ware two-out single.

Tied at six, Radford was unable to get across a run in the top of the eighth, giving Mercer an opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. Jose Hernandez led off the bottom of the inning with an opposite field home run to left. Edgeworth followed with his second RBI single of the game, giving Mercer an 8-6 lead after eight innings.

Radford attempted a late comeback in the top of the ninth as Davis collected his second hit, leading off the inning with a double to the right field gap. The Highlander run came on an error in right field as Trey Truitt bobbled a Luke Wise single, scoring pinch runner Kyle Butler from second base.

One run was all the Highlanders could muster in the ninth inning comeback attempt, dropping an 8-7 decision to Mercer in non-conference action.

The Highlanders will look to salvage the opening series tomorrow, sending Austin Ross to the bump for a 1 p.m. start.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought Zack [Ridgely] pitched a fantastic game, it's shame we couldn't get him the win. We had the lead late and we couldn't hold onto it. That is something we are going to have to work on out of the bullpen. The game got a little fast for some of our young guys at the plate, but as they get more at bats, the game will slow down. We really got some good at bats by our guys early in the game." ~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
