RADFORD, Va. – Radford overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to take the lead, but High Point hit a tying 3-pointer to force overtime and defeated the Highlanders 75-72 Saturday at the Dedmon Center in another tight Big South Conference men's basketball game.

After being plagued by foul trouble in the first half and early in the second, Cameron Jones erupted for 20 of his game-high 22 points in the final 11 minutes of regulation and overtime to fuel RU's rally.

The Highlanders used a 27-11 spurt to turn the 13-point deficit into a 61-58 lead with 2:48 left in regulation. Jones tallied 12 RU points in a row at one point and totaled 18 points during the run, including two 3-pointers and two alley-oop dunks. His fast-break layup made it 59-58 – Radford's first lead since it was 2-0 – and he added another basket on the next possession.

High Point came back with five points in a row to regain the lead, but Ed Polite, Jr.'s three-point play put RU back in front 64-63 with 1:05 to go. Rashun Davis added a runner in the lane to make it a 3-point game. However, High Point's Anthony Lindauer hit a 25-foot 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds left to force the extra period.

Baskets by Jones and Davis gave Radford a 70-68 lead, but the Panthers followed with seven straight points to take control. A dunk by Polite, Jr. made it 75-72 with 17 seconds to play and HPU leading scorer John Brown missed two free throws with 7.1 on the clock. The Highlanders advanced the ball to halfcourt and called their final timeout with 0.9 left and Davis got a look at a 3-pointer but it was off the mark.

Radford now heads into the final week of the regular season, beginning with a trip to Buies Creek, N.C., to face Campbell on Thursday night. The Highlanders then host Longwood for Senior Day next Saturday.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jones played just four minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls. He was then called for his third less than three minutes into the second half.
  • Along with Jones' foul trouble, Davis was held scoreless until less than 30 seconds remained the first half. However, Radford was able to stay within three at halftime by getting 15 of its 27 first-half points from its bench.
  • Jones finished 9 of 18 from the field and tallied his third 20-plus point game in four outings.
  • Davis totaled 14 points to tie Joey Lynch-Flohr for 12th on the RU's all-time scoring list with 1,267. He also added six assists and three steals to equal R.J. Price for eighth in that category with 166.
  • Polite, Jr. recorded his sixth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, his eighth double-digit rebound outing of the year.
  • After shooting just 40 percent in the first half, Radford hit on 58 percent from the field in the second half, finishing at 47 percent for the game. However, the Highlanders connected on just 4 of 18 from long-range and made just 8 of 14 FTs.
  • High Point shot an even 50 percent both in the second half and overall and was 14 of 23 at the free throw line.
  • Brown scored 17 points for the Panthers, but they got 41 points from their bench, including 17 from Miles Bowman, Jr., a transfer who came in averaging 2.0 points in nine games this season after recovering from injury.
  • The defeat was Radford's first in four overtime games this season and third straight setback at home after it had won its first five conference games in Dedmon.
  • The Highlanders' last four games have been decided by a total of eight points.
QUOTABLE
  • "Every loss is a tough one. It definitely stings, but I'm really proud of the way the guys competed to get back in the game and take the lead late with a chance to win in regulation. I thought Brandon (Holcomb) contested the shot well and the kid a hit a tough shot from NBA-range. You've got to give him credit. Every game is tight like this and our guys aren't afraid of the moment and they step up and sometimes shots go in that you need and sometimes you don't finish it. Tonight we didn''t finish it and Thursday night (against Liberty) we did. I think if we can maintain our defensive intensity and energy level throughout the game then maybe we can have a lead and be able to run some clock at the end instead of it being a back and forth affair." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
