RADFORD, Va. – Zach York and Trevor Riggs collected two hits each as Radford dropped a 6-0 decision to Kent State, Friday evening in non-conference action at RU Baseball Stadium. The shutout loss marked the first time since 2011 that the Highlanders have been shutout in consecutive games.

After a scoreless first inning, Kent State crossed the plate first as the Golden Flashes loaded the bases on RU starter Dylan Nelson in the second. Mason Mamarella drew a walk, giving Kent State a 1-0 lead on the bases loaded walk.

Facing potential MLB Amateur Draft first round prospect Eric Lauer on the mound, the Highlanders looked to knot the game at one in the bottom of the fourth. Danny Hrbek and Zach York collected back-to-back singles with two outs. The Highlander threat was put to rest as Jonathan Gonzalez struck out to end the inning.

Nelson settled down after the second inning, retiring seven Golden Flashes in a row, before a two-out single off the bat of Alex Miklos and a walk by Zarley Zalewski put runners on first and second. With one swing of the bat from Dylan Rosa, Kent State found itself leading 4-0 in the fifth inning.

The Highlanders answered with a double down the left field line from Riggs in the bottom half of the inning, but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a triple

Kent State added a run in the seventh on a RBI single from Dom Iero and one in the eighth off a solo home run from Tim Dalporto, cruising to a 6-0 win in game one of the three-game series.

Radford and Kent State return to action tomorrow as the Highlanders send Zack Ridgely to the bump for a 2 p.m. start.

QUOTABLE
  • "Teams don't get many chances to score against [Eric] Lauer. Every opportunity you receive; you have to capitalize with him on the mound. There is no doubt in my mind, that if he stays healthy, he's going to pitch in the big leagues. I thought we took a good approach against him, we barreled up some balls."~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
