SOFTBALL PICKS UP 12TH VICTORY IN SPLIT AT WESTERN CAROLINA

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Radford softball team pulled out an 8-6 eight-inning victory over Western Carolina in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, notching its 12th win of the season to equal its total from last year. The host Catamounts won the second game, 5-2, to earn the split.

Marissa Yow went 3 for 5 with a career-high four RBIs in the victory, including the game-deciding three-run home run in the top of the eighth. Whitney Davis also had a three-run homer among her two hits. Casey Burns added three hits and Kayla Bishton chipped in two as Radford (12-6) totaled 12 in the game. Abby Morrow worked a career-high eight innings in the circle to notch her seventh victory of the year.

The Highlanders had leads of 4-2 and 5-4 in the seesaw game, and answered right back each time Western put runs on the board, with the last occasion coming after the Catamounts tied it in the bottom of the seventh. With the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth, Becky Mantel drew a one-out walk to put runners on first and second. Yow then drilled one over the fence in left-center for her second career homer. Western scored once in its half of the inning, but Morrow put it away on a flyout to Mantel.

Morrow struck out four batters in the first two frames, but issued a rare walk to start the third and was unable to field a groundball back to her, putting runners on the corners. Western (17-8) capitalized with its first two hits of the game, run-scoring two-out singles by Courtney Price and Crystal Cyr, the Catamounts' RBI leaders, for a 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders bounced back to score four runs in the top of fourth, helped by four straight hits. Burns and Bishton dropped bloop singles into left field before Davis hammered a 3-2 pitch high over the fence in center for the three-run shot. It was her third HR of the season and 25th of her career. Hannah Medlam followed with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored when the WCU third baseman couldn't field a grounder off the bat of Marissa Gagliano cleanly, making it 4-2.

Price and Cyr helped the Catamounts tie it in the bottom of the fifth. After a single and a fielder's choice, the duo again came up with back-to-back hits with two outs. Cyr's dropped in front of Mantel in center and got by her, allowing Price to come home with the tying run.

Radford regained the lead in the top of sixth as Yow ripped a two-out RBI single just by the glove of the second baseman, scoring Gagliano, who had walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.

However, Price and Cyr combined for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. After Morrow got the first two outs in the inning, Price doubled to left-center and Cyr grounded one to the right side that diving second baseman Nia Chiles was only able to knock down and Price scored.

Morrow allowed nine hits with just two of the runs earned, while striking out five. The one walk ended a 37-inning streak since her last.

The nightcap was tied 2-2 before Western scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Solo homers by Price in the first inning and Cyr in the fourth gave the Catamounts a 2-0 lead. Mantel then evened it with a two-run homer in the fifth. After Chiles had reached with an infield single, RU's first hit of the game, Mantel put one over the fence in center for her third of the season and 26th of her career.

The Catamounts got five hits and took advantage of a bad break for the Highlanders in the sixth. After a leadoff double, Lauren McInytre came on in relief of Kayla Huffman and got a popout, followed by grounder up the middle that Gagliano fielded but she tripped over second base before she could throw to first. After a groundout for what could have been the third out, Western got a go-ahead RBI single, with a second run scoring on an error on the play. Another RBI single capped the scoring.

Western's Courtney Buchanan limited RU to just the two hits in the game. Huffman suffered her first loss, allowing three runs on five hits. She had five strikeouts and no walks.

Radford will now get set for its home opener on Wednesday afternoon as it welcomes East Carolina for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
