RADFORD DROPS SERIES FINALE; HUFFMAN HONORED

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford softball team suffered its first Big South Conference loss as Charleston Southern rallied for an 8-5 decision in the final game of the series Monday afternoon.

The Highlanders (16-7, 2-1) built a 5-2 lead, but were unable to hold off the hot-hitting Buccaneers over the final three innings, capped by a four-run bottom of the sixth. The teams combined for 29 hits in the game, with Radford totaling 12.

Nia Chiles led Radford's offense, going 3 for 3 with a career-high three RBIs. The three hits tied her best performance as a Highlander. Marissa Gagliano, Casey Burns and Kayla Bishton each had two hits.

Charleston Southern scored a run in the first inning for its first lead of the series, but Radford answered with three runs in the top of the second. Bishton led off with a single and scored on Hannah Medlam's triple to the gap in left-center, her second of the year. The Highlanders then collected three straight singles with two outs for the other two runs. Chiles and Becky Mantel had RBI hits around a single by Gagliano.

CSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a home run before the Highlanders made it 5-2 in the third, as Chiles delivered again with two outs, fouling off a pitch with two strikes before poking a two-run single back up the middle. Burns and Bishton started the inning with singles and moved up a base on a groundout to set up it for Chiles.

However, the Buccaneers collected 11 of their hits over the final three innings, scoring one run in both the fourth and fifth before the game-deciding sixth, which came against freshman reliever Haley Hutchins. Kayla Huffman started the game and Abby Morrow pitched three-plus innings of relief.

Radford continues a busy week with a non-conference doubleheader at Marshall on Wednesday. RU is also scheduled to travel to Winthrop for a three-game series at the end of the week.

HUFFMAN NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Earlier on Monday, freshman Kayla Huffman was announced as the Big South Pitcher of the Week for games played Mar. 14-20. Huffman posted complete-game victories in both of her appearances during the week, while posting a 0.50 ERA to earn her first career individual honor. Huffman held East Carolina to five hits on Wednesday, before notching a one-hitter at Charleston Southern on Sunday. She totaled nine strikeouts with just one walk.
