FARMVILLE, Va. – Zack Ridgely tossed 7.1 scoreless frames and allowed only six Longwood hits as Radford was unable to hold on, dropping a 3-2 decision in 10 innings, Thursday night in the Highlanders Big South season opener.

After a perfect opening frame by Longwood's Travis Burnette and Ridgely, setting the tone for the game as the Highlanders' conference opener turned into a pitchers' duel.

The top of the second saw Trevor Riggs leadoff with a double that hit off the Lancers third baseman, ending up in left field. Riggs used his speed to slide into second safely. Jonathan Gonzalez followed with a groundout, moving Riggs over to third base. The Radford scoring opportunity ended as Jordan Taylor struckout and Zach Duff grounded out to end in the inning.

Longwood threatened the scoreless game in the third as Brandon Harvell and Sammy Miller collected back-to-back one-out singles. Miller followed with a stolen base to put runners on second and third. Ridgely bucked down forcing a pop up and ground out to end the Lancer threat.

After a scoreless fourth, Radford found themselves a scoring opportunity as Luke Wise lifted a long fly ball to deep left-center field, hitting off the stretched out glove of a sprinting Colton Konvicka. With two outs and the Longwood defense playing in normal depth, Colby Higgerson executed a perfect squeeze bunt for a single, plating the speedy Wise for the first run of the contest.

Another scoreless frame from Ridgely sent the Highlanders into the sixth inning with a 1-0 lead. A one-out single from Danny Hrbek set the table for the RU offense. Trevor Riggs followed with a hit-and-run single to left field. Sammy Miller booted the Riggs single, allowing Hrbek to advance to third and Riggs to second. Longwood intentionally walked Gonzalez to load the bases.

Taylor stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. With Longwood's defense playing at the edge of the infield grass, Taylor placed a ground ball between the Lancer shortstop and third baseman, scoring Hrbek from third for a fielders' choice RBI. Radford was unable to push across another run, taking a 2-0 lead into the seventh.

Coming back for his eighth inning, Ridgely allowed a leadoff walk to C.J. Roth, before battling back to punch out Michael Osinski. The Highlanders went to the bullpen with Longwood's heavy hitter Alex Lewis to bat. Nygeal Andrews came on in relief, getting Lewis to groundout for two outs in the inning. Connar Bastaich put the Lancers on the board with a single to center, ending Ridgely's scoreless outing.

Daniel Bridgeman came on in the bottom of the ninth to close out the 2-1 RU lead. Drew Kitson led off the inning with a double off the center field wall. Kitson moved to third on a sac bunt by James Barry. One batter later, Brandon Harvell tied the game at two with a single to left field.

Longwood would go on to load the bases forcing Radford to make another pitching change. Austin came out of the bullpen to strikeout two Lancers, sending the contest to extras.

The top of the 10th saw Shane Johnsonbaugh reach on an error by the Longwood shortstop. Johnsonbaugh advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs. The Highlanders were unable to find a way to score Johnsonbaugh from second.

Back-to-back walks gave Longwood runners on first and second to start the bottom of the 10th. Harvell came through again for the Lancers with single to leftfield, giving Longwood a 3-2 comeback victory.

Radford will meet tomorrow for game two of the Big South three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
