SOFTBALL FALLS IN SERIES OPENER WITH WINTHROP

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Radford's softball team dropped the opener of its three-game Big South Conference series at Winthrop by a 6-3 decision Friday evening.

Casey Burns had two of the six hits for the Highlanders (17-9, 2-2), while Whitney Davis added a hit and an RBI. Abby Morrow suffered her first loss in six starts, giving up four runs on 10 hits – the most she has allowed since the season opener.

Radford took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Davis laced a single past the third baseman and Burns followed with a single up the middle. Davis then stole third on a pickoff attempt at first and came home when Summer Robinson grounded one to the second baseman for a double play.

Morrow pitched around two-out singles in the first two innings, but Winthrop put together four singles - one of them an infield hit - to take 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

The Eagles added another run in the fourth, using another infield hit, a sacrifice, a groundout and an RBI single by leadoff batter Morgan Lowers, and made it 4-1 in the fifth on an RBI double by Zharne Glover.

Radford cut the deficit to one in the top of the sixth. After Becky Mantel reached on an error to start the frame, Kayla Bishton hit her seventh double of the season over the left-fielder. Mantel then came home on a passed ball. Bishton advanced to third on that play and then alertly tagged up on Davis' foulout to the rightfielder to make it 4-3.

However, Winthrop got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning against Kayla Huffman, who had entered with one out in the fifth. Following a two-out double and a walk, Leah Young singled through the left side for her fourth hit of the game, plating one run and another scored when the throw from the outfield hit off the lead runner near the plate. The Eagles totaled 12 hits in the game, 10 of them for singles.

Freshman Kiley Majette recorded the complete-game victory in the circle for Winthrop, recording four strikeouts.

The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
