RADFORD BOUNCES BACK TO EARN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Led by the pitching of freshman Lauren McIntyre and a big hit from Whitney Davis, the Radford softball team posted a 2-1 victory in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Winthrop, after dropping the opener 6-3.

McIntyre tossed her first career seven-inning complete game, while allowing just five hits against a hot Eagles' offense. Davis provided the Highlanders two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning and McIntyre escaped a jam in the sixth before closing it out.

Radford moved to 18-10 on the season and 3-3 in Big South Conference play.

The Highlanders missed out on scoring opportunites in each of the first four innings before breaking through on Davis' hit. Hannah Medlam got it started by slicing a leadoff single to left and Marissa Gagliano and Nia Chiles followed by beating out bunts for hits to load the bases. Two batters later, Davis fought back from down in the count and ripped a 3-2 pitch past the third baseman.

McIntyre, meanwhile, retired the first nine Winthrop batters and 12 of the first 13 - with help from good defensive plays from Gagliano and Chiles – before giving up her lone run on a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth.

Winthrop threatened in the sixth on a pair of singles and an error that loaded the bases with one out. However, Davis came up to catch a soft blooper and threw to Casey Burns at third for the inning-ending double play.

McIntyre took it from there, working around a two-out single in the seventh and getting her second strikeout to end the game. She did not walk a batter, pitched a complete game for the second time in as many starts on the season, and improved to 3-0.

Davis finished with two hits, along with Chiles, her second multi-hit game of the day. Radford totaled eight as a team.

In the first game, Winthrop took a 3-0 lead and pulled away after Radford closed gap to one. The Eagles' offense picked up where it left off in Friday's game, getting three hits, including a pair of doubles, in the first inning against Abby Morrow.

The Highlanders got on the board in the fourth on a two-out, two-run double by Hannah Medlam after Marissa Yow drew a one-out walk and Becky Mantel singled past the shortstop.

However, the Eagles got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning, using three singles – two of them on the infield – a hit batter and a passed ball.

RU made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kayla Bishton that scored Gagliano, who had led off with a single and moved to third as Chiles reached on a throwing error.

Winthrop capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of doubles – with the second one coming on a bunt that went through the right side to the outfield as Chiles left to cover first base for the sacrifice.

Chiles had two of the Highlanders' five hits, along with two stolen bases, giving her 10 for the season. Gagliano recorded her 19th steal.

Radford plays the last of its nine straight road games on Tuesday, traveling to Virginia for a 5 p.m. game. The Highlanders then return home Wednesday for a doubleheader against East Tennessee State.
