WOMEN’S LACROSSE FALLS TO DEFENDING CHAMPION IN BIG SOUTH OPENER

RADFORD, Va. – Winthrop opened defense of its Big South women's lacrosse championship from last season with a 26-5 victory over Radford in both teams' conference opener Saturday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.
 
The Eagles erupted for 16 first-half goals on their way to a 16-2 advantage at intermission. RU scored three of its five goals during a five-minute stretch in the second stanza to close the gap to 19-5. However, Winthrop scored the game's final seven goals.
 
Callie Bonnel guided the Highlanders with her three points (two goals, one assist). Bonnel, who aided RU to a 2 for 3 performance in free-position shots, scored both her goals from the position.
 
Adrian Rius rounded up a team-high five draw controls, while Hannah Rosen picked up four ground balls.
 
Krista Frowein paced Winthrop with a game-high seven goals on seven shots. Danielle Ellis and Shannon Gallagher both contributed five tallies, apiece.
 
Rosen went the distance in goal for the Highlanders, racking up nine saves. Alaina Girani and Jesse Filyaw-Hiu split time guarding the Eagles' goal. The duo combined for three saves, with Girani earning the win.
 
Radford hits the road for its next two Big South tilts. First up is Wednesday's trip to Gardner-Webb. Opening draw is scheduled for 5 p.m.
