POWER, SPEED PROPEL RADFORD TO BOUNCE-BACK WIN, DH SPLIT

RADFORD, Va. – After a quiet game offensively in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader against East Tennessee State, the Radford softball team got it going in the nightcap, totaling season-highs of three home runs and six stolen bases in a 9-3 victory. ETSU took the first game 4-2.

Whitney Davis hit two of the home runs and had three RBIs, while Becky Mantel went 2 for 2 with a two-run shot, three runs scored and two of the stolen bases. Nia Chilies added two hits and also had two steals for the Highlanders (19-12). Davis' two homer game was the fourth of her career.

Lauren McIntyre pitched five innings, allowing just earned run on eight hits to improve her record to 4-0. She struck out two and walked one. McIntyre also recorded an RBI hit in her first career at-bat. Fellow freshmen Jessica Curbeira and Haley Hutchins collected their first hit and RBI, respectively, in a RU uniforms.

Radford used its speed to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Mantel reached on a bunt single, stole second and, after a walk, stole third base as well. She then scored when McIntyre dropped a single down the left-field line.

ETSU (10-12) tied the game on a solo homer in the top of the third, but Davis put the Highlanders back on top to stay in the bottom of the inning, hitting a line drive over the left-field fence. After a single by Kayla Bishton, Mantel drilled her fourth homer of the season and 27th of her career to left, making it 4-1.

RU added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Hannah Medlam led off with a single, stole second and scored on two groundballs. Chiles, who had reached on an error, followed with one of her steals, moved to third on another groundout and scored on a passed ball.

The Buccaneers got a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth to get within 6-3, but the Highlanders answered with one in the bottom of the frame as Mantel walked, went to third on Curbeira's single and scored on Hutchins' RBI groundout.

Davis then capped the scoring in the sixth, blasting a two-run shot well over the fence in left after Chiles had singled. Davis now has seven homers on the season and 29 for her career.

Hutchins worked the last two innings in the circle to close it out.

In the first game, ETSU broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Soft singles started the frame and a pair of doubles followed, leading to the runs.

Radford got one back in the bottom of the seventh as Marissa Yow doubled, Mantel singled and Curbeira got her first RBI on a sacrifice fly. However, a strikeout ended the game.

ETSU pitcher Madison Ogle limited the Highlanders to just five hits, with Marissa Gagliano totaling two. She scored the lone run in the bottom of the first, coming home all the way from second on a wild pitch after a leadoff single and her 20th stolen base.

The Buccaneers tied it quickly in the top of the second using a double, passed ball and infield hit. Abby Morrow then held ETSU to just two hits over the next four innings before the game-deciding seventh. For the game, she allowed three earned runs on 10 hits, struck out three and walked two.

Radford remains at home for a Big South Conference series against Coastal Carolina this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
