BISHTON, MORROW LEAD RADFORD OVER COASTAL, 5-2, IN NIGHTCAP

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team once again rebounded from a loss in the opener of a doubleheader, this time using a five-run first inning to down Coastal Carolina 5-2 Saturday after the Chanticleers won the first game 10-4.

Kayla Bishton capped the early offense with a three-run homer and Abby Morrow took it from there, holding Coastal's offense in check as the Highlanders notched their 20th victory and moved to 4-4 in Big South Conference play. Radford has not lost consecutive games on the same day this season.

Morrow (11-8) allowed just one earned run – a homer by CCU program record-holder Morgan Noad – while holding Coastal to just six hits, with just one of them coming after the second inning. She struck out two and walked one. Marissa Gagliano had two of Radford's six hits, including a double.

After Noad homered in the top of the first, the Highlanders got three hits in the bottom of the inning while capitalizing on two Coastal fielding errors. Nia Chiles hit a one-out single and Becky Mantel reached on the first error. They both moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI grounder by Whitney Davis, which was misplayed the shortstop. Marissa Yow then singled before Bishton hammered a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for her second home run of the season.

Coastal (19-18, 4-4) got an unearned run back in the top of the second, but just two Chanticleers reached base against Morrow over the final five innings – with one on an error. She retired CCU in order in the third, fifth and seventh.

The teams combined for four home runs in the first game, which was tied 2-2 before Coastal's conference leading offense scored eight straight runs and finished with 13 hits. Noad and Mantel exchanged two-run homers in the first inning, with Mantel recording her fifth of the season and 28th of her career.

However, a three-run homer in the third inning gave the Chanticleers a 5-2 lead. They added one in the fourth before scoring four more in the seventh. Summer Robinson capped the scoring for the Highlanders with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

Kelsey Dominik notched her league-leading 12th victory for Coastal. Haley Hutchins took the complete-game loss. The freshman did record her first career hit at the plate.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series and face off in a regular-season conference game for the final time Sunday at 1 p.m.
