RADFORD, Va. –  Radford avoided being shutout in consecutive games for the first time since 2011, when Adam Whitacre led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run, the first of his career. The Whitacre blast was all the Highlanders could manage in the 3-1 loss to Hartford, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action inside RU Baseball Stadium.

The Hawks struck first as David MacKinnon and Chris DelDebbio collected back-to-back one-out base hits. Hartford's two runs came on an Erik Ostberg sacrifice fly and Ben Bengston single up the middle.

After allowing two early runs, RU starter Zack Ridgely settled down, retiring seven Hartford batters in a row at one point.

Hartford added another insurance run in the sixth on another sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of TJ Ward.

Travis McQueen came on in relief of Ridgely, allowing only hit over three innings, while striking out four Hawks. McQueen kept the Hartford bats quiet, giving the Highlanders an opportunity to battle back.

RU only managed one run in the last three innings as Whitacre's solo shot pulled the Highlanders within 3-1.

Radford and Hartford conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Highlanders send lefthander Mitchell MacKieth to the bump and Hartford will send right-hander Brian Murphy.
