RADFORD, Va. – Zack Ridgely did not take April Fools' lightly as he fooled Campbell bats all night in a 6-4 complete game victory over the Camels in Radford's Big South home opener, Friday night in the heart of the New River Valley. Ridgely punched out a career-high seven batters in his second complete game of the season.

Ridgely was able to get the victory as the Highlander offense exploded for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, breaking the 3-3 game.

The inning kicked off with a Kyle Butler walk. Campbell followed with a call to the bullpen, bringing in Erik Dowse, the nation's leader in ERA. Dowse came into the contest with no runs allowed in 26.1 innings pitched. Dowse walked Chandler Davis on four pitches, putting RU runners on first and second.

Colby Higgerson laid down a sacrifice bunt, reaching on an error as Dowse was unable to find a grip on the ball. The error loaded the bases for the Highlanders

Following a Luke Wise strikeout, Dowse hit Chris Coia in the arm as Coia earned the most painful RBI in baseball, giving the Highlanders a 4-3 lead.

Shane Johnsonbaugh followed with a bloop RBI single into center and Danny Hrbek lifted a sacrifice fly to center, giving Radford a 6-3 lead after seven innings.

Campbell attempted a ninth inning rally on Ridgely, who had retired seven batters in a row going into the final frame.

Brian Taylor led off the ninth with a double off the left field wall. Taylor advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a Zach Minnick sac fly.

Ridgely struckout Jimmy Monaghan for the second time on the night to end the rally as Radford held on for a 6-4 victory.

Radford and Campbell will meet for game two of the Big South series tomorrow in a 4 p.m. start.

QUOTABLE
  • "What Ridgely did tonight is what Friday night guys do. We gave him some runs late in the game and he took us the rest of the way. It's never electric with him, he's just going to give you what he has and make batters hit the ball. We really shouldn't have given up a run until the ninth inning. We did just enough offensively tonight for him to get comfortable on the mound." ~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
